Rookie right-hander Chris Phelan signed with the Boomers as a free agent on April 2, 2013.
Following a prolific senior season at Farmingdale, Phelan, 22, was named the Skyline Conference Pitcher of the Year after going 9-1 with a 2.01 ERA, striking out 79 batters in the process. He also went the distance four times in 11 starts, allowing just 61 hits in 76 innings. In his four-year college career, Phelan went 27-9 with a 2.67 ERA and 262 punchouts in 283.2 innings of work, while allowing a .248 opposing batting average and just three homers.
Prior to his senior season, Phelan excelled during a summer ball stint, making five appearances for the Southampton Breakers and going 4-0. Over the course of 40 innings pitched during the summer of 2011, Phelan struck out 26 and gave up just four walks while posting a microscopic 0.68 ERA.
Phelan posted a 1.93 ERA and 7-3 record for the Rams during the spring of 2011, while registering 78 strikeouts in 84 innings of work during a sensational junior campaign. Phelan finished 2010 at 6-4 with a conference-best 3.22 ERA and fanned 62 batters and burst onto the college scene as a freshman in 2009 with a 5-1 record and 3.97 ERA over 18 appearances for the Rams.
Phelan graduated from Patchogue-Medford High School in New York, where he earned All-County, All-League and All-State awards.
