The Boomers signed right-handed pitcher Clark Labitan on June 25, 2013, adding an arm to the bullpen from NCAA Division I Virginia Tech University.
Labitan, 23, was signed at the end of the season's second month in 2013 and shined as a weapon in the bullpen for Manager Jamie Bennett. The side-arm right-hander was lights out in 22 games with the Boomers earning a 2-1 record to go along with a sparkling 1.29 ERA over 28 innings pitched as a professional rookie. Labitan allowed just 18 hits and four earned runs all year while striking out 25 and walking just eight.
Labitan owns five years of experience with the Hokies, redshirting his sophomore year after pitching 34 innings with a 4-1 record during his freshman campaign. The 5’9” slinger followed up with an outstanding junior year, compiling a 3.18 ERA and 6-2 record over 45.1 innings of relief.
After starting 2013 on the National College Baseball Writers Association’s Stopper of the Year Watch List, Labitan delivered in his senior season, collecting 37 strikeouts in 45.1 innings out of the bullpen and earning a 2.58 ERA. Opponents batted just .232 against Labitan in 2013, en route to 11 saves on the year and a career total of 78 scoreless innings.
