SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The 2016 Frontier League Organization of the Year Schaumburg Boomers and Manager Jamie Bennett announced the signings of RHP Kagen Hopkins, OF Zack Weigel, and INF Michael McClellan for the 2017 season.
Hopkins, 24, returns to the Boomers after joining the team in August of 2015 following a trade from fellow Salvi Sports owned Gary SouthShore Railcats of the American Association. In 2016, Hopkins began the season in the bullpen before moving into the starting rotation where he became one of the most dominant pitchers in the league. Hopkins appeared in twenty games for the Boomers during 2016 and earned a 5-6 record and a 3.84 ERA. The California native holds the franchise record for most consecutive scoreless innings at 20.2 set during the 2016 season along with being named Frontier League Pitcher of the Week in June 2016 and one of the three participants for the Boomers in the 2016 Frontier League All-Star Game.
Weigel, 22, signed with the Boomers out of Seton Hall University during the 2016 season. The 6-foot-0 infielder earned a .297/.419/.396 during his 31 appearances for the Boomers in 2016. The Oak Park native was placed on injured reserve in July following an injury sustained in the 3-1 win against Southern Illinois in late July. During his four-year career at Seton Hall, Weigel was named to the 2016 and 2015 All-Big East Second Team and led the Big-East with a .458 OBP in his final season.
McClellan, 22, returns to the Boomers after coming to Schaumburg from the San Rafael Pacifics as a key end-of-season pickup. McClellan posted a .286/.402/.455 during his 23 games in 2016. The Georgia native finished the year with 4 HR, 16 RBIs, and 37 hits split between both teams.
Hopkins, Weigel, and McClellan join four fellow players under contract for Bennett’s 2017 roster. Up to 34 players will be on the roster when Spring Training begins at Boomers Stadium in late April as Schaumburg looks to bring home once again the Frontier League Championship.
The 2017 season kicks off on Friday, May 12th as the Schaumburg Boomers begin their 2017 journey with three straight days of Fireworks. The Boomers will host the Traverse City Beach Bums at 6:30 p.m. Season Tickets, Group Outings, and Boomer Bundle ticket packages are all available now by calling (847)461-3695.
