SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Introductions will not be necessary when Boomers manager Jamie Bennett welcomes his latest acquisition to Schaumburg for spring training in April.

Brett Mabry, 26, an anchor for the Boomers starting rotation in 2016 has signed a contract to return to Schaumburg for the 2017 season.

Originally acquired by the Boomers from fellow Frontier League Gateway Grizzlies before the 2015 season, Mabry’s continued success has been an asset for Bennett and the Boomers. The righty from Shelby, North Carolina, went 2-5 with a 6.30 ERA over 10 starts in 2016, striking out 39 and posting one of three shutouts for the franchise during the season against the Evansville Otters. Following the trade of Seth Webster earlier in 2017, Mabry now leads the team in career innings pitched with 167 and career starts (28).

The East Carolina University product went 8-3 with a 3.07 ERA over 18 starts in 2015, striking out 82 and allowing only one home run in 111 innings pitched. Mabry was dominant in his two seasons for the ECU pirates, recording a 2.35 ERA in 2013 and a 2.24 ERA in 2014.

“I am excited to be back with the Boomers for the 2017 season! I expect nothing short of a winning season for the organization this year,” Mabry said. “I am thrilled to continue to work with Tony Smith as our pitching coach this season as well. He is already preparing our arms with a preseason throwing/workout regime.”

Bennett also announced the signing of experienced left-handed pitcher Rob McDonnell.

McDonnell, 25, comes to Schaumburg after spending the previous season with the Great Lakes Loons and Ogden Raptors, both a part of the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. Drafted by the Dodgers in the 25th round of the 2015 MLB Draft, McDonnell posted a perfect 4-0 W-L record in 2016 with a 3.93 ERA.

Mabry and McDonnell join twenty-seven fellow players under contract for Bennett’s 2017 roster. Up to 34 players will be on the roster when Spring Training begins at Boomers Stadium in late April as Schaumburg looks to once again bring home the Frontier League Championship.

The 2017 season kicks off on Friday, May 12th as the Schaumburg Boomers begin their 2017 journey with two straight days of Fireworks. The Boomers will host the Traverse City Beach Bums at 6:30 p.m. Season Tickets, Group Outings, and Boomer Bundle ticket packages are all available now by calling (847)461-3695.
