Boomers Sweep Grizzlies

SAUGET, IL — The Schaumburg Boomers, presented by Wintrust Community Banks, completed a sweep of the Gateway Grizzlies on the front end of a week-long roadtrip by tallying a 5-4 win on Thursday night.

Schaumburg needed just three batters to take the lead. Kyle Ruchim led off with a double and Zack Weigel followed with a single. Josh Gardiner used a groundout to score the first run. Gateway tied the game with a run in the fourth and opened a 2-1 edge in the sixth. The Boomers quickly responded with four runs in the seventh. Kenny Towns tied the game with an opposite field homer, his third of the year. Ruchim drove home Nick Oddo with a go-ahead single. Gardiner capped the scoring with a two-run double. Gateway pulled within a run in the eighth but left the bases loaded in the ninth.

Conrad Wozniak did not factor in the decision, allowing one run in five innings. Wozniak saw a 20.1 inning scoreless streak end in the fourth, the second longest streak in team history. Austin Kerr collected his fifth win of the year in relief. Jake Joyce posted a strikeout to end the game for his sixth save. Ruchim and Oddo each posted two hits.

The Boomers will continue the trip on Friday night in Central Illinois with a game against the Normal CornBelters at 6:35 p.m. LHP Las Liguori (2-0, 3.21) makes the start against LHP Scott Sebald (3-0, 3.91).
