Boomers Drop Second Straight in Extras

CRESTWOOD, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers went to extra innings for the second consecutive game, falling 5-4 to the Windy City ThunderBolts in 12 innings on Wednesday night.

Windy City struck for three first inning runs, carrying momentum from Tuesday’s victory. Chad Cregar connected for a two-out bases loaded double with a full count to score three runs. The first inning runs were all that starter Andy Weeks allowed, battling through five innings in a no-decision. Schaumburg was able to take one back in the top of the second as Frank Pfister worked the count before driving his second homer of the year over the wall in left.

Schaumburg evened the game in the top of the fourth. Jereme Milons led off the inning with a walk and Gerard Hall followed by blasting a triple off the wall in center to pull the Boomers within a run. Pfister tied the game with a single to right.

Cregar was at it again in the bottom of the sixth, connecting on a homer off reliever Dave Whigham to hand Windy City a 4-3 lead. Cregar’s homer was his third in as many games. The Boomers found a way to tie the game with two outs in the top of the eighth. Nate Baumann stroked a single to left and scored from first when breaking on a 3-2 offering to Nick Kuroczko that blooped into right for a double.

The hosts were able to win the game in odd fashion in the 12th. A one-out double against Thomas Nelson, the fifth Scahumburg pitcher, placed the winning run on base. Two intentional walks loaded the bases with two away for Windy City pitcher Matt Costello, who was batting after the ThunderBolts inserted the designated hitter into the field. Costello was hit by the first pitch to force home the winning run.

Five individuals posted multiple hits for the Boomers, who banged out 12 in the loss. Pfister led the way with a 3-for-5 showing. Hall, Baumann, Kuroczko, and Chad Mozingo also netted two hits apiece.

The series concludes tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. RHP Robby Donovan (1-0, 0.00) will make his second start of the season for the Boomers while Windy City counters with RHP Mike Recchia (1-0, 0.00).
