First Road Trip Concludes This Evening

The Schaumburg Boomers and Windy City ThunderBolts have played three games in the span of two, playing 27 innings over two days with a pair of extra-inning affairs, both won by the ThunderBolts.

Windy City recorded a 5-4 win last night in 12 innings when pitcher Matt Costello was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Costello was batting because Windy City was out of position players and needed to move the designated hitter into the field. The Boomers issued a two out intentional walk to load the bases to face Costello. Reliever Thomas Nelson, the first Schaumburg pitcher to appear in both games of the series (By contrast Windy City used five relievers, all of whom pitched in Tuesday’s 15-inning affair), hit Costello with the first offering to force home the game-winner.

Schaumburg rallied from a pair of deficits, allowing three first inning runs before tying the game in the fourth and scoring in the eighth to force extra-innings. Frank Pfister homered in the game, collected three hits, and drove in a pair.

After winning the first three games of the year, the Boomers have dropped back-to-back affairs for the first time in franchise history and sit 3-2 entering tonight’s series finale. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. with RHP Robby Donovan (1-0, 0.00) making his second start. Donovan pitched five shutout innings in the season opener on Friday, earning the win. The lanky right-hander struck out the side in the first and totaled five strikeouts in the outing. Donovan was forced to leave early with a blister on his throwing hand. Windy City counters with RHP Mike Recchia (1-0, 0.00). Recchia pitched in relief during Tuesday night’s game.
