Opening Weekend Wraps With Fireworks

For the third time in the season’s first eight games, the Boomers went to extra innings last night. For the first time in franchise history the Boomers came out on top in an extra-inning affair, posting a 1-0 walk-off win in the bottom of the 13th over the Florence Freedom last night.

Both starting pitchers were flawless in stellar efforts. Tyler Watkins worked into the ninth in just his second professional start, allowing just four hits with three walks and three strikeouts in 8.1 innings. Maxx Catapano twirled eight blank frames for Florence, walking one while striking out five. The winning run crossed the plate in the bottom of the 13th when Nick Kuroczko jogged in to score on a wild pitch from Florence closer Jorge Marban.

Fans were treated to an eating exhibition after the game when Takeru Kobayashi mouthed a Brat-A-Boom in less than two minutes.

Schaumburg has won its first two games at home and tonight will aim for its second sweep of the season in a special 6:30 p.m. game. The contest will be the lone Sunday night home game of the year and in celebration of Memorial Day will have a special pregame ceremony for veterans as well as postgame fireworks.

RHP Robbie Penny (0-0, 1.29) starts for the Boomers tonight against LHP Andres Caceras (1-0, 2.57).
