Boomers Storm Back for 6-3 Victory over Rippers

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers battled back from a 3-1 deficit exploding for five runs in the bottom of the eighth to earn a 6-3 win Wednesday afternoon at Boomers Stadium.

The game-winning rally started when Boomers catcher Mike Valadez earned a free trip to first base after being plunked by the 0-2 offering from Rippers starter Sheng-An Kuo. LF Sean Mahley, also in a two-strike hole, smacked the 1-2 pitch to right for a double ending the day for Kuo, who was dominant for seven innings Wednesday. The 6’3” righty from Taiwan earned the no-decision after baffling Boomers hitters all afternoon and allowing just 3 hits. Kuo was responsible for the runners on second and third when he exited.

In came RHP Adam Arnold for the Rippers and the Boomers hitters went right to work against the London, Ontario native. Boomers SS Andrew Cohn tripled to the right field corner on the first pitch from Arnold to tie the game at three runs apiece. Drew Heithoff coaxed a walk and advanced to third on a Nick Kuroczko RBI-single against the drawn in infield that drove in Cohn from third.

After another Rippers pitching change, Heithoff scored on an error by Rippers second baseman Tony Delmonico and a bunt single by Jereme Milons loaded the bases for CF Chad Mozingo. The Boomers centerfielder drove in Kuroczko with an RBI-groundout to give the Boomers the 6-3 win.

Boomers RHP Robbie Donovan (1-1, 4.24) got the no-decision for the Boomers after an excellent performance. Over his seven innings of work Wednesday, the 6’5” righty struck out a franchise record 10 batters and allowed three runs – two of which scored on weakly hit balls that fell just in front of Boomers outfielders.

RHP Joe Parsons (1-1, 2.25) earned the win for the Boomers after pitching a scoreless and hitless eighth inning with a pair of strikeouts. LHP Jose Rodriguez (1-0, 0.00) struck out the only batter he faced in the ninth and RHP Patrick Mincey (0-0, 0.00) closed the door for the Boomers to earn his first save of the season.

London got on the board first after a pair of hits to take a 1-0 lead. A leadoff single by Zach Larson and a sacrifice bunt by Clifton Thomas put a runner in scoring position with one out. A triple down the right field line from Aaron Glum gave the visitors a one-run lead before Donovan came back to strike out the Chick-Fil-A Batter of the Game Justino Cuevas and Tony Delmonico to strand Glum on third.

Another leadoff hit led to a run for London in the top of the fourth. Rippers 1B Joash Brodin doubled to deep center and moved to third on a groundout. Donovan battled back to get the next hitter and almost stranded the runner on third but the blooper off the bat of Stephen Cardullo found some grass in the outfield to push the London lead to two.

Schaumburg got on the board in the second and cut the lead to one. Heithoff led off the frame with a smash up the middle and moved up to second on an errant throw by Cuevas. After Kuroczko advanced Heithoff to third on a groundout, Boomers 3B Frank Pfister laced a line drive to right-centerfield for a run scoring double, which cut the Rippers advantage to 2-1.

London extended their lead in the top of the sixth with a run on two hits. With one out, David Christensen walked and moved to third on a single to right by DH Mark Samuelson. Another soft popup dropped in front of a Boomers outfielder, which allowed Christensen to score on the RBI-single by Cardullo for a 3-1 Rippers lead before the Boomers took control in the eighth.
