Walk-Off Win Clinches Series for Boomers

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers improved to 8-4 on the season with a 3-2 walk-off victory over the London Rippers to claim the first series between the two Frontier League expansion teams Thursday evening.

After the Boomers RHP Jason Braun worked out of a bases loaded jam with nobody out in the top of the tenth inning, Schaumburg loaded the bases with one away in the home half of the frame. 1B Nick Kuroczko singled to left and moved to second when Frank Pfister reached on an error. Jereme Milons executed the successful sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third with one away. London intentionally walked DH Chad Mozingo to load the bases and set up the double play.

RF Nate Baumann, who homered on Opening Night last Friday, fouled off the first pitch and laced the second on a line to right. The Rippers David Christensen made an amazing diving catch down the line for the second out, however Kuroczko still had plenty of time to tag up and cross the plate for the Boomers second walk-off win of the homestand. With the win, the Boomers improve to 8-4 in their Inaugural Season, with Braun picking up his first win of the season.

The cold and wet conditions at Boomers Stadium Thursday provided for a low scoring game, but that should not take away from excellent performances by both starting pitchers. LHP Cameron Roth (2-0, 1.77) continued his strong start to his Boomers career earning the no-decision for Schaumburg. Roth allowed just six hits and two runs over his seven innings of work. RHP Jamie Richmond also earned a no-decision despite a strong outing allowing 2 runs on eight hits over his eight innings.

Kuroczko and Milons each contributed a pair of hits for the Boomers with Milons scoring twice and Kuroczko scoring the walk-off run for the second time on the homestand. RHP Alex Thieroff pitched a scoreless eighth and Braun allowed two hits and one walk in two scoreless innings to earn the win for the Boomers. RHP David Francis took the loss for London, his first of the season.

London got on the board first when a pair of runs scored on a ground-rule double by Christensen in the third with runners on second and third.

The Boomers answered with their first run of the ballgame in the fourth. Milons singled and moved to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run when Baumann singled to left. The safety squeeze by Boomers catcher Mike Valadez allowed Milons to score and cut the lead to 2-1.

After back-to-back singles by Pfister and Milons with one out put the Boomers in business in the eighth, it appeared as though Schaumburg would squander the opportunity when Pfister was called out on a very close play on a pickoff attempt at second base. However, Milons stole second to get in scoring position and came around when Mozingo singled to left to knot the game at two runs apiece. There the score remained until the theatrics in the tenth.
