Boomers at Southern Illinois: June 2

The Schaumburg Boomers will look to rebound from a 7-2 loss last night to the Southern Illinois Miners in the second game of the series at 7:05 p.m. tonight.

Southern Illinois posted three straight hits in the first inning including a triple and a double to grab an early 2-0 lead. Chad Maddox posted his league best third triple to drive home his league best 18th run in the inning. The Boomers came back with a two-out run in the third to claw within a run. Nick Kuroczko singled home Andrew Cohn. Kuroczko has posted a hit in seven consecutive contests, matching Frank Pfister for the longest streak of the season. Pfister, who collected a pair of hits last night to extend his current streak to five games, recorded a hit in each of the first seven games of the year.

The host Miners added four runs in the bottom of the inning including a two-run homer from Matt Fields, his league best sixth of the year. Two more runs scored unearned in the inning as the Miners built a 6-1 edge. Schaumburg was able to threaten in the ninth but left the tying run in the on deck circle as Gabriel Shaw recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the game. Tyler Watkins pitched six innings but suffered the defeat. Pfister and Chad Mozingo posted two hits apiece in the game as the Boomers placed runners on in eight of the nine innings.

Schaumburg will turn to RHP Robbie Penny (1-0, 2.77) tonight in the middle game. Southern Illinois places RHP Thomas Campbell (0-2, 11.12) on the bump. The Boomers are currently 3-4 on the road and 8-2 against the East Division. After this weekend, the Boomers play 24 straight against the West Division, 15 of which are at home where Schaumburg is currently 5-1.
