Fireworks Tonight as River City Visits

For the third time this season the Schaumburg Boomers swept an opponent, taking down the Gateway Grizzlies 5-4 in a strange game last night at Boomers Stadium.

The Boomers overcame a 2-0 deficit last night to open a 4-2 lead in the seventh inning. Schaumburg was awarded a run retroactively in the sixth inning to pull within 2-1 before back-to-back homers handed the Boomers the lead. The homers from Jereme Milons and Chad Mozingo marked the first time in franchise history that the Boomers connected on back-to-back shots. The Boomers have hit just four homers at home this season but own an 8-1 mark at Boomers Stadium.

Gateway was able to tie the game with a pair of runs in the ninth as for the first time in franchise history the Boomers blew a save. Schaumburg immediately ended the game in the ninth. Milons led off with a single and moved to third when Mozingo doubled to left. Following an intentional walk, Mike Valadez won the game with a single up the middle past the drawn in infield. Valadez has posted a hit in four consecutive games and finished 2-for-4 last night. Milons also posted a pair of hits and owns a five-game streak.

Frank Pfister’s nine-game hitting streak came to an end with an 0-for-3 night, but the third baseman did drive home his team best 11th run of the season.

The leaders of the West, River City, makes its lone appearance of the season at Boomers Stadium beginning tonight. The Rascals became the first team in league history to reach the championship series in three consecutive seasons last year, falling to Joliet in four games. River City won 68 games last season and claimed the Frontier League crown in 2010.

RHP Robbie Penny (1-1, 3.50) will make the start for the Boomers against RHP Tony Marsala (1-0, 3.38). Fireworks will follow the contest.
