Boomers Agree to Terms with First Two Players

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers and Manager Jamie Bennett announced the signing of a pair of rookie infielders in Andrew Cohn of Emory University and Tyler Boling.

A four-year letter winner at Emory, an NCAA Division III program in Atlanta, Ga., Cohn boasted a .331 career batting average with 200 hits in 160 career games as a member of the Eagles. Cohn, whose father Mike played baseball at Yale University, was named to the University Athletic Association’s (UAA) All-Conference Team in each of his four years at Emory and took home Gold Glove honors in 2011. Playing primarily third base and shortstop, the Atlanta, Ga. native was also a three-year ESPN Academic All-American nominee and attended Alan C. Pope High School in Marietta, Ga., the same school as Frontier League Deputy Commissioner Steve Tahsler.

The 2007 Christian Athletic Georgia All-State Player of the Year, Boling comes to the Boomers after a season in the New York State League, a lower-level Independent League which acts as a developmental league for the Canadian-American Association of Independent Professional Baseball, better known as the Can-Am League. A product of East Cobb Baseball, one of the premier youth baseball operations in the country, Boling batted .325 in the New York State League in 2011 playing second base primarily.

Both Cohn and Boling become the first two players under contract with the Boomers in 2012. Frontier League rules permit up to 34 players on the roster when the Boomers open Spring Training in early May with a maximum of 24 players on the active roster for Opening Day when the Boomers travel to Avon, Ohio to take on the Lake Erie Crushers on Friday, May 18 for their first game ever.
