Boomers Hold Off Slammers to Move into First

JOLIET, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers stopped a six-game road losing streak by holding off the Joliet Slammers 5-3 on Monday night, moving into a tie for first with the team’s third consecutive victory.

Nate Baumann handed Schaumburg a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Baumann homered on the first pitch of the inning from Joliet starter Steven Maxwell. The longball allowed the Boomers to extend the lead to 4-0 in the fifth. Mike Valadez led off with a single to center and moved to third when Drew Heithoff singled through an opening on the right side with Valadez on the move. The hits stopped a stretch of 10 in a row retired by Maxwell, who suffered the loss despite throwing seven innings. Gerard Hall, activated before the game after missing 13 games with a shoulder injury, connected on a three-run homer over the wall in right.

Joliet pulled within 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth. Hector Pellot doubled and scored from third on a wild pitch with two outs. The sixth inning tally was the lone run allowed by Schaumburg starter Cameron Roth, who improved to 4-0. Roth pitched 6.2 innings and scattered eight hits while walking two and striking out two.

The Boomers collected an insurance tally in the eighth as Hall led off with a walk and scored on a Frank Pfister double. The Slammers made it interesting in the ninth, taking advantage of a pair of two-out errors, but Jason Braun was able to close the game for his second save of the season, leaving the tying runs on base. Joliet stranded 13 in the contest. Hall finished 2-for-3 in his return to the lineup, scoring a pair of runs and driving home three. Baumann also posted two hits in the win.

The brief three game road series continues Tuesday night with another 7:05 p.m. tilt. RHP Tyler Watkins (1-1, 2.39) takes to the hill for the Boomers against a to be determined starter for Joliet, the defending Frontier League champions.
