Boomers Rally Falls Just Short

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers fell behind 6-0 but rallied to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning but could not overcome the early deficit, falling 6-4 on Father’s Day at Boomers Stadium.

The loss stopped a franchise best four-game win streak. Windy City’s Chad Cregar continued to be a thorn in the side of the Boomers (18-10), driving home five of the six runs for Windy City (15-11), who owns four wins over the Boomers this season. Cregar lifted a three-run homer in the first against Schaumburg starter Tyler Watkins and added an RBI groundout in the fifth and an RBI single in the seventh. Cregar has hit four of his seven homers this season against the Boomers and owns 12 RBIs against the team. Watkins (1-3) pitched six innings but allowed five runs to take the loss. Steve McQuail and Sean Mahley posted two hits in the defeat for the Boomers.

Schaumburg rallied with two seventh inning runs to chase Windy City starter Stephen Sauer (3-1) from the game. Gerard Hall walked, Frank Pfister singled, and newcomer McQuail also walked to load the bases. Mahley delivered a two-run single to left. Pinch hitter Chad Mozingo doubled in the eighth and scored on a Hall groundout. McQuail, signed before the game, led off the ninth with a homer to account for the final tally.

The Boomers continue to lead the West Division and will look to avoid dropping a series at home for the first time this season with the middle game on Monday night at Boomers Stadium in a 6:30 p.m. affair. RHP Robbie Penny (2-2, 4.85) starts for Schaumburg against RHP Dustin Williams (3-2, 5.29).
