Late Rally Propels Boomers to Win at Joliet

JOLIET, Ill. — Trailing 3-1 in the eighth, the Schaumburg Boomers scored four times, including three with two outs, to hand the Joliet Slammers their fourth straight defeat with a 5-4 win on the road Wednesday night.

Gerard Hall opened the eighth by drawing a walk and scored the first run on an errant throw to first on a fielder’s choice. Jereme Milons tied the game with a single through the right side to score Sean Mahley and Nick Kuroczko put Schaumburg ahead with a two-run single to center. The late-inning rally made a winner of Robby Donovan (4-1). Donovan struck out seven in seven innings of work for the Boomers (20-11), allowing three runs. Patrick Mincey left the tying run at second in the ninth inning to earn his sixth save in as many chances. Frank Pfister logged three hits at the plate to lead an 11-hit attack for the Boomers.

Both teams traded runs in the first as Steve McQuail knocked home his fourth run in as many games for Schaumburg. Joliet (14-17) built a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the fifth against Donovan. The Slammers pulled within 5-4 in the bottom of the eighth on a pinch-hit homer from Jimmy Waters, the first of his professional career.
