7/1: Boomers vs. Beach Bums @ 1 PM

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Schaumburg Boomers and Traverse City Beach Bums meet in round two of the First Place Faceoff in Schaumburg with a 1 p.m. scheduled first pitch on Daily Herald Family Day! Stick around after the game for the post-game Autograph Session presented by Wintrust Community Banks!

The First-Place Faceoff continues with Game Two of this three-game series in Schaumburg on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The West Division leading Boomers will send RHP Matt Kuna (1-0, 3.00) to the hill to face LHP David Deminsky (4-1, 5.30) for the Beach Bums.

The Boomers lost the first game of the first place face off series to Traverse City, failing to hold an early 3-1 lead. Traverse City’s Jose Vargas homered with two outs in the first to hand the Beach Bums, leaders of the East and owners of the top mark in the league, an early 1-0 lead. The Boomers came back with three in the bottom of the inning following a one-out walk. Frank Pfister opened a string of four consecutive hits. Chad Mozingo tied the game with a single while Nate Baumann posted a two-run double to hand Schaumburg the lead.

Traverse City starter Brooks Belter then settled down, retiring 14 straight into the sixth. Brian Heere connected on a three-run homer in the top of the second against Boomer starter Robbie Penny to put the Bums back in front. Penny tossed five innings and suffered the defeat. The Beach Bums tacked on an insurance run in the sixth. Every member of the Traverse City lineup recorded a hit as the Beach Bums totaled 13.

Schaumburg made three roster moves prior to the start of today’s game. The Boomers parted ways with last night’s starter, Robbie Penny, granting him his release. Penny threw five innings and dropped to 2-4 on the season. The starter surrendered a team high six homers this year, more then 25 percent of the team total for the season. Two new pitchers have joined the team in rookie Patrick Lala from the University of Iowa and Alex Rivers.

Rivers spent two seasons with the Royals organization and pitched in nine games for the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks of the American Association earlier this season. Rivers is the second former RedHawk (Adam Tollefson) to join the squad. Both Rivers and Lala were coached by hitting coach C.J. Thieleke in the Northwoods League with the Madison Mallards. Thieleke managed Madison for six seasons from 2005-10. Tollefson also played for Madison. Schaumburg’s roster now sits at 24 with 13 pitchers and 11 position players.
