Boomers Held Off in Opener at Normal

NORMAL, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers could not overcome a shaky start in a 5-3 loss to the Normal CornBelters on the road Wednesday in the first ever meeting between the two clubs.

Normal scored three of its five runs with two outs including a first inning tally to open the scoring on a single from Steven Felix. Cameron Roth (4-2) battled through six innings but suffered the loss for the Boomers. Roth threw more pitches than his complete game in the last outing. Chad Mozingo roped a one-out triple in the second and scored the tying run on a Nate Baumann single. Chico Gomez connected on a two-run homer in the second, the first of the season allowed by Roth, to put Normal (14-21) in front and the hosts never trailed the rest of the way.

The Boomers (23-14) added unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings and has the tying runs on base in the seventh and ninth but failed to even the game. Sean Mahley finished 3-for-4 in the contest.

Schaumburg hangs on to a one-game lead in the West Division. The teams will reprise again on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. RHP Robby Donovan (4-1, 3.95) starts for the Boomers opposite RHP Tyler Lavigne (3-1, 2.49).
