Boomers Shut Out Normal to Win Series

NORMAL, Ill. — The West Division leading Schaumburg Boomers improved to a season-best 11 games over the .500 mark by recording an 8-0 shutout of the Normal CornBelters in the rubber game of a three-game road series Friday night.

The Boomers (25-14) scored in six different innings and rode the arm of Tyler Watkins to the victory. Chad Mozingo opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with a two-out single up the middle to plate Sean Mahley as Schaumburg scored five runs with two outs in the game. Nate Baumann plated three and provided breathing room with a two out two-run single in the third. Watkins (2-4) snapped a four-decision losing streak by working eight shutout frames. Watkins allowed just seven hits while walking one and striking out four.

Eight different individuals recorded hits for the Boomers, who slugged a season high 16 in the win. Mike Valadez led the way with three hits and Mahley scored three runs. Jason Braun finished off the shutout with a perfect ninth.

Schaumburg opens a three-game series at Boomers Stadium on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. against the leaders of the East, the Traverse City Beach Bums. It's Cup of Joe Night at the first 1,500 fans through the gates will receive a free Travel Mug. RHP Robbie Penny (2-3, 4.73) starts for the Boomers opposite RHP Brooks Belter (4-0, 2.92) for the Beach Bums.
