Boomers Battle But Fall to Beach Bums 5-3

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — In the first meeting between the Frontier League’s two first place teams, the Schaumburg Boomers suffered just their fifth home loss of the season and first at the hands of the Traverse City Beach Bums by a final of 5-3 Saturday evening.

Early in the contest it looked as if both starting pitchers would not last more than a few innings after the Boomers (25-15) and Beach Bums (28-12) combined for seven runs in the first two innings Saturday, with Traverse City holding a 4-3 lead. Boomers RHP Robbie Penny worked three scoreless innings after surrendering a pair of home runs in the first two innings. Penny (4-3, 5.00) took the loss following five innings where the 6’2” righty struck out six and gave up seven hits. Brooks Belter earned his fifth win of the season for the Beach Bums and at one point retired 14 straight Boomers batters in the contest.

A trio of Boomers contributed at least two hits with Nate Baumann driving in two runs in the first and Chad Mozingo tallying the other RBI for Schaumburg. Tonight’s defeat at the hands of Traverse City marked the first loss for the Boomers in a game where they play error-free baseball at home.

The First-Place Faceoff continues with Game Two of this three-game series in Schaumburg on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. The West Division leading Boomers will likely send RHP Matt Kuna (1-0, 3.00) to the hill to face LHP David Deminsky (4-1, 5.30) for the Beach Bums.
