Boomers Blow Away Beach Bums in 1st Place Battle

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The first-place Schaumburg Boomers exploded for four runs in the sixth and three in the eighth to take claim a series victory in the Frontier League’s First Place Faceoff after an 8-4 victory Monday evening.

The Boomers (27-15) blew open a 1-1 ballgame after finally breaking through against Beach Bums (28-14) starter Jacob Clem, who falls to 3-4 with the loss. Chad Mozingo’s RBI-triple to the right field corner to drive in Steve McQuail gave the Boomers a lead they would not relinquish. Schaumburg took advantage of a wild pitch and an error for a 4-1 lead before Karexon Sanchez singled to drive in Jereme Milons to cap the scoring in the first of two big innings for the Boomers offense.

Schaumburg outfielder Sean Mahley continued his hot-hitting of late (12-25 over his last six games – good for a .480 batting average) with a three-hit performance, including a sixth inning double. Frank Pfister drove in a pair with a double of his own in the eighth to cap off a two-hit night while Nick Kuroczko and Ty Nelson each added a pair of hits in the game for the Boomers.

Starter Cameron Roth (5-2, 2.35) held a potent Traverse City lineup in check, allowing just one run through his 6.2 innings of work. The southpaw struck out seven Beach Bums and scattered seven hits in the contest to continue his outstanding start to his first season in Schaumburg.

Boomers reliever Jason Braun (3-0, 1.77) picked up where Roth left off out of the Boomers bullpen, throwing a scoreless and hitless 1.1 innings, including an outstanding no-look, stab of a Kyle Colligan line drive destined for center field to close out the eighth. After checking into the game with an 8-1 lead, closer Patrick Mincey allowed his first runs of the season after a pair of walks and three infield singles before striking out Jeff Flagg to end the Traverse City threat and preserve the win for the Boomers.

Schaumburg heads to Evansville, Ind. to take on the Otters for a brief three-game series before returning home for a weekend set against the Washington Wild Things. RHP Robbie Donovan (5-1, 3.83) is slated to start for the Boomers with RHP Bryce Morrow (2-4, 5.73) getting the call for the Otters.
