Boomers Fall in Opener at Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — The West Division leading Schaumburg Boomers rallied late but left the tying run in scoring position in both the eighth and ninth innings in suffering a 2-1 loss in the series opener at Bosse Field Tuesday night.

Evansville, who owns an ERA under 2.00 at home, opened a 1-0 lead with two outs in the second. The Otters received a bases loaded walk from leadoff man Matt Sheely to force home a run. The run was the only earned tally surrendered by hard luck loser Robby Donovan (5-2). Donovan allowed an unearned run in the fifth but worked through seven innings.

The Boomers (27-16) pulled within 2-1 in the eighth as Chad Mozingo extended his hitting streak to nine games with a run scoring single. Evansville closer Eric Massingham entered to leave the tying run at second in the inning and did the same in the ninth after a one-out walk to Ty Nelson. Karexon Sanchez belted an offering deep down the line in right with two outs that could have been a go ahead homer, but the play was ruled foul.

Pfister recorded two hits in the game while Nelson and Steve McQuail reached twice but the Boomers were unable to solve Bryce Morrow (3-4) who tossed seven shutout frames.

The series continues with a 4:00 p.m. start on Wednesday. RHP Tyler Watkins (2-4, 3.60) starts for the Boomers against LHP Matt Zielinski (4-3, 4.73).
