Boomers Handed Loss in Back-and-Forth Contest

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — For the second straight night, a Schaumburg Boomers late rally comes up just short as the Washington Wild Things were able to strand Mike Valadez at third in the ninth to take the series after an 8-7 victory Sunday afternoon.

The loss to the Wild Things (18-29) Sunday marks just the second series the Boomers (29-19) have failed to win at home during their Inaugural Season. Schaumburg heads into the All-Star Break on top of the Frontier League’s West Division to close a successful first half for the new franchise. The Boomers will send 10 representatives to the 2012 Frontier League All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 11 (five players and five coaches) with Frank Pfister slated to start at third base and participate in the Home Run Derby on Tuesday.

Valadez, who led the charge for the Boomers with a 3-5 performance, led off the ninth with his second double of the game, this one down the left field line. The Boomers backstop moved to third with one out on a two-strike sacrifice bunt by Jereme Milons but a pair of groundouts followed with the game tying run stranded on third as Washington’s Chandler Barnard earned his first win of the season out of the Wild Things bullpen.

Every member of the Boomers starting lineup recorded at least one hit with Schaumburg collecting a total of 15 in the contest. Nate Baumann, who also went 3-5 for the Boomers, added a triple and three runs scored in a losing effort. The Boomers Patrick Mincey suffered his first loss of the season after allowing a run on two hits in the ninth.

After spotting Washington two runs in the first, the Boomers scored three times in the third, capped off by a Valadez RBI-single to right, to take a 3-2 lead. The Wild Things broke the game open with four runs in the sixth on three hits to take a 7-4 advantage, but the Boomers battled back to tie the game. Mozingo collected his team leading 14th and 15th two-out RBI with a sharp single to right in the home half of the sixth and Valadez crossed the plate on a Karexon Sanchez single in the seventh before a Rick Devereaux RBI-single drove in the game-winning run for the visitors.

After the All-Star break the Boomers are back in action at Boomers Stadium with the first of a six-game homestand of Friday, 14 at 6:30 p.m. Join us for Fireworks Friday as Melrose Pyrotechnics is in the house for another outstanding fireworks display following the game.
