Last Man to Win 30 - Denny McLain Visits Boomers

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers welcome former Detroit Tigers pitcher, 1968 American League Most Valuable Player and the last pitcher to win 30 or more games in a season, Denny McLain, to Boomers Stadium on Sunday, July 15 for the 1 p.m. game against the Normal CornBelters.

McLain, 68, played 10 years with four major league teams, most notably for the Detroit Tigers (1963-1970). Originally signed by the Chicago White Sox, McLain made his Major League debut against the South Siders in a Tigers uniform, holding the White Sox to one earned run on seven hits. For his career, McLain holds a 131-91 record on the mound with a 3.39 ERA in 280 big league games.

The Mount Carmel High School great is a two-time AL Cy Young Award winner (1968, 1969), a three-time MLB All-Star (1966, 1968, 1969), a World Series Champion as a member of the Tigers in 1968 and the 1968 American League MVP. McLain is also the last pitcher to win 30 or more games in a Major League season, a feat accomplished by only thirteen players in the 20th Century.

McLain will be selling copies of his new book “31-6” and his older book “I Told You I Wasn’t Perfect” as well as signing autographs and throwing out a Ceremonial First Pitch!
