Outstanding Pitching Propels Boomers to 6-2 Win

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — A day after the first nine-inning complete game in Schaumburg Boomers history, Matt Kuna and the Boomers bullpen did not allow an earned run en route to a 6-2 victory over the Normal CornBelters Saturday.

The first-place Boomers (31-19) raced out to a three-run lead in the first, hit a franchise record three home runs and rode the arms of the Schaumburg pitching staff to knock off the CornBelters (16-32) and set the stage for a chance at the sweep Sunday. Three consecutive singles got the Boomers on the board first as Steve McQuail, who went 2-4 on the night with a two runs scored and two runs batted in, drove home Sean Mahley for a 1-0 Schaumburg lead. Frank Pfister scored on a fielder’s choice and McQuail crossed the plate on a Drew Heithoff infield single to cap a big first for the Boomers.

In just his fourth consecutive start, Kuna surrendered just two fourth inning hits and no earned runs to claim his second win as a professional. The Griffith, Ind. native pitched six strong innings for Schaumburg to lower his ERA to 3.08 on the season. Joe Parsons breezed through 1.2 innings, striking out one and allowing just one hit while lowering his ERA to a team-best 1.35. Patrick Mincey was dominant out the of the pen as well after giving up no hits and striking out two in his 1.1 innings to earn his eighth save of the season.

The Boomers belted back-to-back homers in the eighth to add some insurance late in the game. Leading off the frame McQuail went yard to make it 5-2 Schaumburg and Mozingo smacked the very next pitch over the wall for his fourth of the season. This marked the second time in franchise history the Boomers accomplished such a feat and Mozingo was a part of both, with the last one featuring Jereme Milons then Mozingo going deep on June 7 against the Gateway Grizzlies at Boomers Stadium. During tonight’s contest, Milons also belted his second home run of the season with a towering drive over the Miller Lite Party Deck in left field in the fifth.

The same two teams meet Sunday with a scheduled 1 p.m. first pitch as LHP Cameron Roth (5-3, 2.77) takes the hill for Manager Jamie Bennett and the Boomers with RHP Daniel Britt (3-4, 4.95) getting the call for the CornBelters.
