Marathon Effort Leads Boomers to Series Win

CRESTWOOD, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers won the longest game of the season, using strong defense to stave off the Windy City ThunderBolts in 12 innings and post an 8-6 win to capture the road series between two of the top teams in the league.

The Boomers (35-25) scored twice in the 12th inning to earn the win. Mike Valadez led off the inning with a double grazing the line in right and Jereme Milons followed by reaching on a bunt. With one away Chad Mozingo was intentionally walked to load the bases for Frank Pfister. Pfister sent a bouncer to second but hustled up the line to beat the throw as Valadez crossed the plate. Milons scored a key insurance run moments later on a wild pitch.

Karexon Sanchez homered to open the game for the Boomers against Windy City ace Mike Recchia before the ThunderBolts scored single runs in the third and fourth to take a 2-1 edge. Drew Heithoff’s two-out RBI single tied the game in the top of the fourth and Schaumburg chased Recchia by striking for three two-out runs in the sixth. Pfister stroked an RBI single up the middle and Steve McQuail looped a single to center scoring a tandem. Recchia issued a season high five walks in 5.2 innings for Windy City.

Matt Kuna started for Schaumburg and worked into the seventh, exiting with the lead. The game reached extras as Schaumburg failed to hold a 5-2 lead late with Windy City rallying to force extras. Chad Cregar’s 20th homer of the season and sixth against the Boomers in the bottom of the ninth off Patrick Mincey sent the game to extras.

Both teams scored in the 11th as Sean Mahley blooped a single to score Frank Pfister in the top of the frame. Windy City loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the inning but could only score the tying run on a hit batter. Sam Robinson earned the win with Tyler Ware collecting his first save. Pfister and Sanchez posted three hits apiece as both teams combined for 30 in a game that started 30 minutes late due to a morning thunderstorm.

A brief three-game series begins at home against the Joliet Slammers at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. LHP Cameron Roth (6-4, 3.59) will start for the Boomers opposite RHP Jacob Sanchez (3-0, 2.29) on I Appreciate You Day featuring non-stop compliments and mystery envelopes.
