Schaumburg Boomers Shut Out Slammers Again

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Starter Alex Rivers and the Schaumburg Boomers bullpen combined to shut out the Joliet Slammers for the second consecutive night with a 2-0 victory at Boomers Stadium Thursday.

The Boomers (37-25) pitching staff has now combined for 21 straight scoreless innings against the Slammers (26-36). Rivers extended his personal scoreless streak to 12 innings after the righty pitched a career-high seven shutout frames for Manager Jamie Bennett Thursday. The California native struck out seven and allowed just three hits before giving way to Joe Parsons, who struck out the side in the eighth. Tony Delmonico, the converted infielder who signed with the Boomers prior to today’s game, pitched a scoreless ninth with a strikeout to earn his first save with Schaumburg.

Tommy Mendoza pitched very well allowing just two runs on six hits but took the loss for the Slammers. Steve McQuail put the Boomers in front with his ninth home run of the season in the second inning. The only other run scored in the contest came on a Karexon Sanchez sacrifice fly to center in the third after Jereme Milons led off the frame with a triple to right.

Schaumburg goes for the sweep Friday of this three-game set with rookie righty Cody Griebling (1-1, 2.77) getting the nod for the Boomers and the Slammers will counter with RHP Michael Perconte (0-3, 8.14) for the 6:30 p.m. scheduled first pitch on a night complete with fireworks after the game!
