Boomers Downed in Opener at Florence

FLORENCE, Ky. — The Schaumburg Boomers fell behind early and could not recover in a 7-1 defeat at the hands of the Florence Freedom in the opener of a road series on Tuesday.

Florence opened a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run double from Drew Rundle with the bases loaded followed by a two-run single from Jim Jacquot. Alex Rivers (2-2) worked six innings for the Boomers, the 10th consecutive game in which a starter threw at least six innings. Rivers was hit with the loss. Florence added two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to account for the offense. Schaumburg broke up the shutout in the ninth with two outs on a Nate Baumann RBI single.

The Boomers collected 10 hits in the game. Frank Pfister finished 3-for-4 with a double while Tony Delmonico, starting in the field for the first time, also collected a pair of hits. Baumann and K.C. Judge also finished with two hits.

The series continues tomorrow night with another 6:05 p.m. contest. RHP Cody Griebling (2-1, 2.05) starts for the Boomers opposite RHP Sean Gregory (6-5, 3.80).
