Slammers Hand Boomers Fourth Straight Defeat

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers jumped out to an early 3-1 lead but dropped their third straight to the defending champion Joliet Slammers 11-5 on Sunday afternoon.

In the longest nine-inning game of the year, which lasted just over four hours, the Boomers (41-31) lost a home series for just the fourth time all season as the Slammers (30-42) collected 17 hits in the contest. Schaumburg snapped a 29.1 inning scoreless streak when Nate Baumann, who finished 2-4, crossed the plate following a Drew Heithoff single and an error by the Slammers David Christensen in right field. The Boomers took their first lead of the series on a Jereme Milons single to center, and the advantage grew to 3-1 on an RBI-single by Baumann in the third.

It was pretty much all Slammers after that as Joliet scored 10 runs over the game’s final six innings to claim the victory. David Fox, Kyle Maunus and Josh Lyon each contributed three hit games for visitors and Chase Doremus picked up the win out of the bullpen with 2.2 shutout innings of relief. Jason Braun took the loss out of the Boomers bullpen after surrendering two runs on two hits in his 2/3 of an inning Sunday.

Steve McQuail’s team-leading 13th home run of the season cut the Slammers advantage to 8-6, but the Boomers would come no closer as Joliet scraped together three runs in the ninth to put the game out of reach. Frank Pfister added a pair of hits for the home team and Milons reached three times with a walk and two singles.

Schaumburg will take a much needed off day before heading down to the St. Louis area to take on the River City Rascals on Tuesday in the first of a three-game set. The Boomers RHP Cody Griebling squares off against RHP Tom Marsala (4-5, 3.68) for the Rascals at the 7:05 p.m. scheduled first pitch as Tim “Woody” Calderwood will broadcast all the action live on 1410 AM WRMN Elgin and online at www.wrmn1410.com.

The Boomers return home on Tuesday, August 14th for the first of nine games in 10 days at Boomers Stadium. For details on the fun promotions for the Boomers remaining home games, visit www.boomersbaseball.com/schedule/promotions.
