Traverse City Walks Past Boomers in Opener

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — The Schaumburg Boomers pitching staff issued eight walks and hit a pair of batters, helping to aid the Traverse City Beach Bums in a 6-1 win on Friday night in the opener of a three-game set.

Steve McQuail blasted his 15th homer of the season in the top of the second the opposite way to right against a strong wind blowing in to hand the Boomers a 1-0 lead. Cameron Roth started for Schaumburg and lasted only five innings to suffer the loss. Roth struggled with his control, walking five and hitting one. Roth walked Kyle Eveland to force home the tying run in the fourth. A pair of doubles helped the Bums grab a 3-1 lead in the fifth but Roth struck out three consecutive batters to leave a pair in scoring position.

Traverse City added a single run in the seventh on three consecutive walks with two outs to force home a run. Two unearned runs scored in the eighth to account for the final.

The series continues at 6:05 p.m. tomorrow when RHP Alex Rivers (2-2, 5.18) faces RHP Scott Dunn (4-3, 3.38). The Boomers (43-33) have dropped back-to-back games on the roadtrip.
