Boomers Outslug Road Warriors to Take Series

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers scored 13 runs on 16 hits Sunday evening and needed every one of them as Chicago’s newest professional team hung on for a 13-12 victory at Boomers Stadium.

On a day where offenses thrived, the Boomers (48-26) owed much of their success to the heart of the batting order as four men combined for 14 of the 16 Schaumburg hits. Chad Mozingo was a double shy of the cycle and led the way with a 5-6 day at the plate, including his 11th homer of the season, a triple, four runs scored and four RBI. Second baseman Chase Fontaine continued a great start to his Boomers career with four hits including his third double for Schaumburg in just his fifth game. Frank Pfister’s three single performance pushed his team-leading average to .329 and Steve McQuail smacked his club-best 18th home run of the season as part of his four RBI and two-hit day for the Boomers.

Schaumburg appeared to be on their way to an easy victory after taking a 7-2 lead after the game’s first two innings. The Boomers batted around in the first inning and plated four runs on four hits including Mozingo’s line drive, two-run homer to right field. In the second, the Road Warriors scored twice, but the Boomers answered with three runs of their own thanks to consecutive extra-base hits by Mozingo, McQuail and Fontaine.

The Boomers led the entire game, but to the Road Warriors credit, at no point did that lead seem safe as they kept chipping away at the Schaumburg advantage. Wesley Jones finished 3-5 with a pair of runs scored for the visitors and Matt Wright contributed a 2-4 effort with three runs scored and three runs batted in to go along with his second home run of the season in the fourth.

Sam Robinson earned the win in relief of RHP Matt Kuna, who last four innings and surrendered six runs on 10 hits. Joe Parsons pitched a scoreless and hitless inning and a third, and Kirk Clark earned his first save in a Schaumburg uniform with a perfect 1.1 innings. Clark has yet to allow a run in his 6.2 innings as a member of the Boomers.

After an off day Monday, the Boomers finish up this nine-game homestand with three against the Evansville Otters starting with a 6:30 p.m. game on Tuesday, August 21. LHP Cameron Roth (8-7, 3.35) gets the nod for Boomers Manager Jamie Bennett and will be opposed by RHP Bryce Morrow (6-7, 4.36) for the Otters.
