Boomers Gain Ground Behind Griebling

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — For the second straight game, the Schaumburg Boomers received an outstanding performance from their starting pitcher as rookie Cody Griebling lead the way to a 2-1 victory over the Southern Illinois Miners Wednesday afternoon at Boomers Stadium.

Griebling, a true rookie out of Southern Missouri, put an exclamation point on his first professional season with a masterful outing for the Boomers (53-39) Wednesday. The six foot two inch right-hander stymied the Southern Illinois lineup over his 8 2/3 innings on the mound. Griebling held the Miners to just one run on three hits with five strikeouts to improve to 6-2 on the season since signing with the Boomers as a free agent on July 17. The Germantown, Wisconsin native picked up his fourth win in the month of August and was an out away from the second complete game of his young career.

Schaumburg got on the board first with a single tally in the first when Chad Mozingo’s double to the wall in right drove home in Nate Baumann all the way from first. The lead was short-lived however as Southern Illinois scraped across a run in the next half inning when Ken Gregory crossed the plate on a wild pitch.

After the Boomers took the lead in the fifth on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Frank Pfister Griebling, Mincey and the Boomers defense took care of the rest. A couple nice plays by Karexon Sanchez in the hole at short and one up the middle by Chase Fontaine kept the Miners of the board and the Boomers in front. Mincey struck out the only batter he faced in the ninth to earn his 16th save of the season.

Boomers left fielder Chad Mozingo paced the Schaumburg offense with his 28th multi-hit game of the 2012 season. His 3-4 effort was also the 8th time the former Washington Nationals farmhand has supplied at least three base hits in a game. Chase Fontaine and Baumann each contributed a pair of singles as well for the Boomers. Schaumburg improved to 15-3 in one run games at home, 10-2 at home when the defense does not commit an error and 27-7 when the starting pitcher goes at least six innings at Boomers Stadium.

With the rest of the Frontier League idle until Wednesday evening, the Boomers add another win to their record to put the pressure on the other teams in search of the three remaining playoff spots.

After securing the first two games of this pivotal series, the Boomers look for the sweep of Southern Illinois Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. on the last regular season home game of the season and Fan Appreciation Night complete with Post-Game Fireworks presented by H Group Benefits, Inc. and Lerman, Sweeney and Co! RHP Alex Rivers (4-3, 5.19) takes the mound for Boomers Manager Jamie Bennett against the Miners LHP Daniel Calhoun (6-4, 2.63).
