Newest Boomers Share Dream, Birthday

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — Born on opposite sides of the country on October 11, 1989, both Yale University left-handed pitcher Vinny Lally and Campbell University middle infielder Ellis Lowe will begin their pursuit of the professional baseball dream with the Schaumburg Boomers after agreeing to terms Friday, Manager Jamie Bennett announced.

Lally, 22, comes to the Boomers after an outstanding senior season as a member of the Yale Bulldogs. The ace of the Bulldogs staff, the southpaw earned a 5-1 record appearing in 13 games with 10 starts. Over his 67.1 innings pitched in 2011, Lally posted a sparkling 2.54 ERA with four complete games and a pair of shutouts to go along with 70 strikeouts against 40 walks. The Tampa, Fla. native also allowed just 40 hits on the year en route to being named First-Team All-Ivy League and being selected to the 2011 New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association All-Star Game.

A four-year letter winner at Yale, Lally’s numbers improved significantly every year in a Bulldogs uniform. Lally finished his collegiate career with a 16-7 record and 4.62 ERA over his 181 innings at the Division I level. The lefty appeared in 57 games, which included 27 starts, five complete games and three shutouts. Lally racked up 175 strikeouts and allowed just 153 hits in a career that also included an All-Ivy Honorable Mention in 2010 when he went 7-2 with a 4.71 ERA.

Lowe, 22, completed his four-year Campbell career as the school’s all-time leader in hits (332), doubles (69), runs (201), RBI (173), total bases (449), at-bats (919) and games played (217), and the infielder also ranked sixth in stolen bases (49) and seventh in batting average with a .361 career mark.

Lowe finished as one of the top hitters in Atlantic-Sun baseball history, currently standing third in hits, fourth in doubles, fifth in at-bats and is just outside the top-20 in batting average with his .361 career mark. Lowe was named to the 2008 Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team, 2009 All-Atlantic Sun Second Team, 2009 All-South Region Team as well as the 2009 and 2011 Atlantic Sun All-Academic Team.

The San Diego, Calif. native was a starter all four years as a member of the Fighting Camels, with his best seasons arguably coming as a sophomore and junior. Campbell excelled in 2009 with a .404 batting average and 62 RBI while drawing 20 walks and only striking out 20 times. Lowe followed with a stellar 2010 campaign that saw the 6’1” infielder post a .382 batting average and collect an impressive 31 doubles for Campbell.

With the addition of Lally and Lowe, the roster now stands at 10 for the Inaugural Season of Boomers Baseball. All three will join pitcher Matt Collins; infielders Tyler Boling, Andrew Cohn, Brandon Hairston and Drew Heithoff; and outfielders Nate Baumann, Raphael Turner and John Wagle when the Boomers open Spring Training in early May.

As many as 34 players will vie to be included in the final roster of 24 when the Boomers travel to Avon, Ohio to take on the Lake Erie Crushers to open the season. The Boomers return home to Schaumburg for their first home game on Friday, May 25 against the Florence Freedom at 6:30 p.m. Season Tickets, Boomer Bundles and Group Tickets are on sale now by calling the Boomers at 847.461.3695 and for more information on the Boomers, be sure to visit www.boomersbaseball.com.
