Boomers Add Three to Spring Training Roster

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers agreed to terms with three players in University of La Verne RHP Mark Larini, Northern Kentucky RHP Andy Heston and fleet-footed outfielder Cody McMorris, Boomers Manager Jamie Bennett announced today.

Larini, 22, joins the Boomers after a strong start to his professional baseball journey with the Las Cruces Vaqueros in the semi-pro Pecos League. In eight games with Las Cruces, where he was a teammate of Boomers catcher Brad Hawn, the 6’1” right-hander earned a 3-2 record and a 3.68 ERA over seven starts and 44.0 innings pitched, all while succeeding in predominantly hitter-friendly parks.

Larini graduated from the University of La Verne in 2011 with a degree in Movement & Sport Science after a stellar career on the diamond as a member of the Leopards Baseball Team. As a senior in 2011, the El Monte, Calif. native transitioned from utility player to the ace of the Leopard pitching staff, leading the squad in both innings pitched (83.1) and strikeouts (75) during the regular season. Larini posted a 5-3 record and 3.02 earned run average, en route to a First Team All-SCIAC (Southern California Intercollegiate Athletics Conference) Selection.

On the mound, the Arroyo High School alum collected an 11-6 career record over 155 career innings pitched. Larini had six career complete games, including five during his stellar senior season, and struck out 137 opposing hitters and surrendering just 62 free passes. For his college career as an infielder, Larini boasts a career .327 batting average with 22 doubles and a very solid OPS of 818.

Heston, 22, joined the Windy City Thunderbolts for a brief four-game stretch after graduating from Northern Kentucky University with a degree in Sports Business and a stellar four-year career on the mound for the Norse Baseball Team. Heston allowed six earned runs in just 6.1 innings in a very small sample size with the Thunderbolts in 2011.

Primarily a reliever at NKU, Heston thrived during a senior season that included four complete games in 68.0 innings pitched and 18 appearances. A Second Team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Selection in 2011, Heston produced a stellar 9-1 record and sparkling 1.72 ERA after allowing just 49 hits and collecting 58 strikeouts for the Norse. Over his four-year collegiate career, the Wilmore, Ky. native threw 130 innings with a 12-3 record and 2.77 ERA with a phenomenal 4.52 strikeout to walk ratio (113 strikeouts and just 25 walks).

McMorris, 24, has two years of experience on the independent circuit and in 2011 spent spring training with the Gary SouthShore RailCats, the other professional team of Boomers Owners Pat and Lindy Salvi before moving on to the Edinburg Roadrunners of the North American Baseball League. McMorris had six hits in eight games with the Roadrunners before joining the McAllen Thunder, also of the NABL. McMorris stole 11 bases in 2011 and batted .200 in 27 games. McMorris also appeared in 17 games with the St. George Roadrunners of the Golden League and stole 14 bases in 2010.

McMorris was recently named to the University of South Carolina Aiken All-Decade Team after an outstanding two-year career for the Pacers. McMorris was tabbed to the Rawlings Division II Gold Glove Team in 2008, and one year later as a senior in 2009, McMorris was selected to the All-Region Team and to the Peach Belt Conference All-Conference team after batting .367 and leading the PBC with 39 stolen bases.

With the additions of Larini, Heston and McMorris, the Boomers now have 21 players on the active roster and can have up to 34 players on the roster on May 2 when the team is scheduled to report for Spring Training. All three will join infielders Andrew Cohn, Brandon Hairston, Gerard Hall, Drew Heithoff and Ellis Lowe; pitchers Matt Collins, Wally Goodline, Vinny Lally, Patrick Mincey, Joe Parsons, Robbie Penny, Dave Whigham and Andy Weeks; catchers David Fanshawe, Brad Hawn and Mike Valadez; and outfielders Nate Baumann and Raphael Turner.

The Boomers open their Inaugural Season on Friday May 18 in Avon, Ohio against the Lake Erie Crushers but return home for the first professional game on the newly installed playing surface at Boomers Stadium on Friday, May 25 at 6:30 p.m. when the Boomers take on the Florence Freedom.
