Whitney Young Grad Among Three Signed

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers agreed to terms with a trio of pitchers with significant experience in affiliated minor league baseball with the additions of Chicago native and former Whitney M. Young Magnet High School star RHP Jamaal Hollis, former Houston Astros farmhand RHP Robby Donovan and former Baltimore Orioles prospect LHP Cameron Roth, Boomers Manager Jamie Bennett announced today.

Hollis, 24, comes to the Boomers after a pair of seasons in the Chicago White Sox organization. The White Sox selected Hollis in the 33rd Round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft and the Chicago native posted excellent numbers in his 40 professional appearances. In 63.2 innings, Hollis was 4-3 with a 3.39 ERA with 75 strikeouts and 34 walks for a combination of three teams in the Sox system.

“Jamaal had a couple of solid years with the White Sox and should provide an excellent option for us in the backside of the bullpen,” said Bennett. “I think it will be a great opportunity for him to play close to home.”

After being drafted in the 25th round of the MLB June Amateur Draft in 2006, Hollis elected to attend Miami (Ohio) University. As a member of the RedHawks Baseball team, Hollis compiled a career ERA of 4.99 in 66.7 innings pitched over 64 appearances. The 6’1” right-hander had an outstanding junior year where he earned a 3-0 record and a 2.08 ERA in 26.0 innings out of the bullpen in 2009. Hollis allowed just six earned runs all season in ’09 while striking out 21 and allowing nine free passes.

A four-year letter winner as a baseball player at Whitney Young, Hollis was a two-time All-City Selection in high school and played in the All-City All-Star Game in 2006 at U.S. Cellular Field.

“Robby and Cameron should both be outstanding assets to our staff,” Bennett added. “Both guys have an excellent background as starters and should raise the bar in terms of competing for spots in our rotation.”

Donovan, 23, joins the Boomers after three seasons in the Houston Astros farm system. After being selected in the 23rd round of the 2009 MLB First Year Player Draft following his junior season at Stetson University, Donovan pitched 33.2 innings with the Low-A Tri-City ValleyCats of the New York-Penn League. In 19 games, Donovan posted a 3.74 ERA with four starts and four saves.

The following year, Donovan split time with the Class A Lexington Legends and the Class Advanced A Lancaster Jethawks. On the year, Donovan was 9-8 with a 4.22 ERA in 130.0 innings in 26 starts. For his pro career, Donovan holds a 16-27 record and a 5.11 ERA in 301.0 innings. In 71 games, Donovan made 56 starts, threw one complete game and struck out 214 batters.

The Royal Palm Beach, Fla. native played three seasons at Division I Stetson University, electing to attend the Atlantic Sun Conference school after being drafted in the 35th round of the 2006 MLB June Amateur Draft. Donovan appeared in 42 games on the mound for the Hatters, going 9-12 with 32 starts and one complete game. Donovan pitched 200.0 innings for Stetson and allowed 231 hits, struck out 160 and walked 77 to go along with a 5.36 career ERA.

Donovan went 8-3 with 100 strikeouts in 79.0 innings for Royal Palm Beach High School and led team to an appearance in district playoffs. The 6’5” righty was named First Team All-County and recognized as a Puma All-American following a 5-0 junior season in 2005.

Roth, 23, was drafted in the 29th round of the 2010 MLB June Amateur Draft by the Baltimore Orioles and pitched for two seasons in the Orioles system before signing with the Boomers as a free agent. For his career, Roth owns a 5-6 record with a 4.72 ERA in 137.1 innings with 104 strikeouts.

The southpaw went 2-4 in 55.1 innings pitched for the Bluefield Orioles of the Appalachian League in 2010. Roth struck out 47, issued 21 free passes and posted a 4.23 ERA after allowing 26 earned runs over 12 starts. In 2011, Roth pitched for the Delmarva Shorebirds, the Orioles Single-A affiliate in the South Atlantic League, going 3-2 with a 5.05 ERA in 32 appearances. In 82.0 innings primarily out of the bullpen, Roth allowed 46 earned runs while striking out 57 and issuing 33 walks.

Roth attended the University of North Carolina Wilmington and pitched for three seasons for the Seahawks baseball team. An All-Colonial Athletic Association Second-Team Selection in 2010, Roth boasts a 3.93 career ERA with 128 strikeouts to go along with a 13-9 record at UNC-Wilmington. During a phenomenal junior season, Roth led UNCW with a 7-4 record, a 2.98 ERA and tied for second in the CAA with seven wins, winning five straight decisions at one point.

The 6’1” lefty was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and a Ping Baseball Freshman All-American in 2008 after not allowing an earned run in his first 21 innings of collegiate action. Roth also garnered CAA Rookie of the Year Honors and a spot on the CAA All-Freshman Team for his work out of the bullpen in 2008.

After missing significant time in 2009 with shoulder tenderness, Roth excelled in the premier collegiate summer league with the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod League. Roth helped Bourne win the Cape Championship with a 3-2 record and a 3.45 ERA in 13 appearances, striking out 22 in 31.1 innings.

A Second-Team All-State Selection for Virginia power Denbigh High School, Roth was a four-year starter and named Peninsula Conference Player-of-the-Year as a senior. Roth also earned All-Region and All-District honors as a sophomore, junior and again as a senior.

With the additions of Hollis, Donovan and Roth, the Boomers now have 27 players on the active roster, which may consist of up to 34 players on May 2 when the team is scheduled to report for Spring Training at Schaumburg Boomers Stadium. All players in Boomers camp are vying for up to 24 spots on the Boomers Opening Day Roster.

All three players join infielders Jordan Castaldo, Andrew Cohn, Brandon Hairston, Gerard Hall, Drew Heithoff, Andy Heston, and Ellis Lowe; pitchers Matt Collins, Wally Goodline, Vinny Lally, Patrick Mincey, Joe Parsons, Robbie Penny, Alex Thieroff, Tyler Watkins, Dave Whigham and Andy Weeks; catchers David Fanshawe, Brad Hawn and Mike Valadez; and outfielders Nate Baumann, Jeff Harkensee, Cody McMorris and Raphael Turner.
