Three Added to Roster on Day of First Workout

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — With the first official workout scheduled for 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 3, the Schaumburg Boomers added three more players to the spring training roster on Wednesday in OF Patrick Biserta, LHP Thomas Nelson and OF Nate Bryan.

Biserta, 22, comes to the Boomers after logging time last season in the independent Can-Am League with the Newark Bears. The left-handed hitter played in 20 games for Newark, connecting on a pair of homers and driving home 12 runs.

Initially drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 24th Round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Biserta spent one season with the Red Birds. The New Jersey native played 53 games in the New York-Penn League as a member of the Batavia Muckdogs. Biserta posted a .281 batting average with a homer and 26 RBIs while adding a pair of stolen bases.

Biserta was a First Team All-Big East choice as a junior at Rutgers University in 2010. Biserta, who was the first player from Rutgers drafted since 2008, belted 18 homers as a junior, the second most in a single season in school history. Biserta backed up the power numbers with a .368 batting average while also drawing a team best 26 walks.

Nelson, 24, enters his second season as a professional. The 6-0 left-hander appeared in six games with Boomers owners Pat and Lindy Salvi’s other minor league baseball club, the Gary SouthShore RailCats of the American Association late in the 2011 season, where the southpaw threw four innings for the ‘Cats.

The Chico, California native began his professional career in 2011 with the Roswell Invaders of the Pecos League. Nelson appeared in four games with the Invaders, allowing just one run on two hits.

Bryan, 23, appeared in just one professional game in his career during a brief stint with the RailCats last season after finishing his college career at Purdue University North Central.

In his final campaign at Purdue University North Central, Bryan batted .306 while hitting two home runs and driving in 40 runs. Bryan also led the team in walks (22) and finished second in hit by pitches (7). Prior to attending PNC, Bryan began his college career at Ancilla College, where he batted .364 with 11 doubles and six homers and posted a .476 on-base percentage.

With additions of Biserta, Bryan and Nelson, the Boomers now have 31 players on the active roster, however players selected in the Frontier League Draft are do not count toward the total for the first week of Spring Training, so there will be 34 players on the field for Boomers on Thursday, May 3 when the team is scheduled for the first workout of Spring Training. All players in Boomers Camp are vying for up to 24 spots on the Boomers Opening Day Roster.
