Boomers Add Two To Spring Training Roster

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The final spring training roster for the Schaumburg Boomers has been set with the addition of two more players today, infielder Nick Kuroczko and catcher Ty Nelson, Manager Jamie Bennett announced today.

Kuroczko, 23, spent the last two seasons as a member of the Frontier League’s Windy City ThunderBolts, led by Boomers Bench Coach Mike Kashirsky, who managed the ThunderBolts in 2010 and 2011, guiding the team to a playoff berth in 2010. Kuroczko opened his professional career with Windy City in 2010, hitting .261 with three homers and 22 RBIs in 54 games played.

The native of San Rafael, California returned to the ThunderBolts in 2011, playing in a career best 84 contests. Kuroczko batted .245 with a homer and a career high 24 RBIs. The left-handed hitter, who has played both second and third, also scored 45 runs and stole eight bases.

Prior to becoming a professional, Kuroczko spent four years as a member of the University of Utah baseball team. As a junior, Kuroczko tied for second in the nation with nine triples, one of which came off current Washington Nationals ace starter Stephen Strasburg. Kuroczko hit over .300 in his final three seasons with the Utes including a career high and team best mark of .353 as a junior in 2009. Kuroczko was named to the 2010 All-Mountain West Conference Baseball First Team as well as the All-Tournament Team.

Nelson, 23, arrives in Schaumburg as a rookie following a pair of solid seasons at the University of Tennessee-Martin. Nelson batted .345 as a junior in 2009. Nelson improved for his senior campaign, ranking among the national leaders with a .395 batting average, earning Second Team All-Conference honors in the Ohio Valley Conference. Nelson led the team in average while also posting 20 doubles, four triples, and 19 stolen bases to go with eight homers and 45 RBIs.

With additions of Kuroczko and Nelson, the Boomers now have 33 players on the active roster, however players selected in the FL Draft do not count toward the total for the first week of Spring Training, so the Boomers have 36 players in camp. All players in Boomers Camp are vying for up to 24 spots on the Boomers Opening Day Roster.
