Gary rallied from a pair of deficits only to allow Schaumburg to score twice in the bottom of the ninth to win. The Boomers wasted no time in scoring early, plating a run in the bottom of the first against RailCat starter Mike Perconte. Raphael Turner drew a one-out walk and scored from first on a double from Gerard Hall that carried all the way to the wall. Perconte settled in, striking out five in the contest over two innings.

Cameron Roth started for Schaumburg, making his second appearance of the spring. Roth, who threw a pair of scoreless innings in Friday’s 14-1 win in the ALS benefit game, twirled three scoreless frames against Gary. The former Orioles farmhand allowed just two hits while walking two and striking out four.

The visiting RailCats tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the fifth against Jose Rodriguez, the fourth overall selection in the 2012 Frontier League Draft. Mike Massaro, who set a Gary record for triples last season, opened the inning with a triple to right-center and scored on an RBI groundout from Jason James.

Schaumburg took a 4-1 lead with three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jeff Harkensee led off with a single and moved to third when Chad Mozingo singled to center. With two outs, Hall recorded two runs with a double over the glove of Gary’s first baseman into right field. Nick Kuroczko, batting for the first time, stroked an opposite field double to complete the inning. The RailCats again tied the game, scoring three unearned runs in the eighth.

The Boomers secured the victory by striking for two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Kuroczko led the charge by coaxing a one-out walk. With two outs Nate Baumann blasted a triple off the wall in right, scoring Kuroczko. Baumann scored moments later on an RBI single from Jordan Castaldo.

Schaumburg’s pitching staff limited Gary to just four hits although there were seven walks and a hit batter. Hall led a nine-hit parade as the lone player from either side to notch more than one, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Matt Collins threw the final 1.1 innings to collect the victory.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in Gary at U. S. Steel Yard.
