Boomers, RailCats Settle for Tie in Showdown

GARY, Ind. — The Schaumburg Boomers and Gary SouthShore RailCats completed a two-game series by finishing in a 3-3 tie on Wednesday afternoon at U. S. Steel Yard in a 9 1/2 inning exhibition game.

The RailCats opened the scoring in the bottom of the second against Boomer starting pitcher Dave Whigham. Mike Coles led off with a double down the left field line, stole third, and came across when Mike Massaro dropped a single into left-center. That was the only run and hits surrendered in three innings of work for Whigham as the starting pitching was again strong.

Drew Heithoff drew a leadoff walk in the top of the fifth against Gary reliever Matt Jansen. A sacrifice bunt moved Heithoff to second before Frank Pfister hammered a double into the left field corner against new pitcher Kyle Wilson, to score Heithoff. With two outs Jordan Castaldo walked and Pfister quickly stole third. Brandon Hairston lined a double to right-center to clear the bases and hand Schaumburg a 3-1 lead.

Mike Rohde tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning with a two-run homer to right off reliever Joe Parsons. The homer came with two outs and also scored Coles, who singled.

Robbie Penny was near flawless in three innings of work in place of Whigham, walking one and striking out five while not allowing a hit. Patrick Mincey threw the ninth.

The Boomers will welcome the defending Frontier League Champion Joliet Slammers to Boomers Stadium for the first of consecutive contests on Thursday at 1:00 p.m.
