A big inning again pushed Joliet, the defending Frontier League champions, to an early lead. The Slammers batted around in the first inning, scoring six times against Schaumburg starter Vinny Lally. Erik Lis opened the scoring with a three-run homer to right. The other big hit in the inning came in the form of a bases loaded single from Ben Hewett to score two. The Boomers came back with a run in the bottom of the inning. Nate Baumann lifted a sacrifice fly to knock in Drew Heithoff, who walked with one out.

Joliet added a third inning run against Lally, who suffered the loss after allowing seven runs on six hits with six walks, three strikeouts, and a hit batter. Andy Weeks shined in relief of Lally, throwing three scoreless innings. Weeks allowed a hit while striking out a pair. Side-armer Andy Heston threw 1.2 blank innings as well, surrendering just one hit before leaving with two outs and the bases empty in the eighth.

The Boomers put together a strong showing in the bottom of the fifth inning to battle back, scoring three times and placing the tying runs on base before the inning was halted due to pitch count. The frame opened with a single up the middle from catcher Ty Nelson. Ellis Lowe followed with a single and Brandon Hairston loaded the bases with a single. With one away Sean Mahley singled in two runs. The final run of the inning crossed on a sacrifice fly from Chad Mozingo. The visitors put the game away with two runs apiece in the eighth and ninth.

Schaumburg put together eight hits in the defeat. Andrew Cohn was the lone Boomer to post more than one hit. Cohn, who started at third, finished 2-for-2.

With the first game of the season at Lake Erie just a week away, the exhibition schedule will continue this weekend. The Boomers (2-2-1) visit Rockford on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
