Donovan Strong But Boomers Fall at Rockford

LOVES PARK, Ill. — Despite a strong effort from its starting pitcher, the Schaumburg Boomers dropped their third spring game in a row, falling 5-4 at Rockford in a 10 ½ inning game on Saturday afternoon.

Schaumburg wasted no time in jumping out in front. Raphael Turner led off the game with a single to right. Turner then stole and second third before scoring with two outs on a single off the bat of Frank Pfister.

Rockford managed to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. Jet Butler drew a leadoff walk and scored when Matt Greener doubled down the left field line. The run was the lone blemish for Schaumburg starter Robby Donovan. Donovan threw five innings and allowed just one run on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

The Boomers didn’t wait long to retake the lead, scoring twice in the top of the sixth. Cody McMorris led off the inning with an infield single on a bouncer over the mound. McMorris promptly stole second and scored from second on a throwing error. Chad Mozingo coaxed a walk and came around from first on a two-out double off the bat of Pat Biserta. Rockford pulled within 3-2 in the bottom of the inning on an Evan Button RBI single.

A wild pitch with the bases loaded allowed the host Riverhawks to tie the score in the bottom of the eighth. The Riverhawks netted a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the 10th to open a 5-3 lead. The Boomers put the tying run on base in the 11th. McMorris reached second on an error to open the inning, stole third, and scored when Sean Mahley rolled an infield single.

Biserta and McMorris registered two hits apiece as the Boomers totaled 11 in the defeat. Nine different individuals collected at least one hit in the contest.

With the first game of the season at Lake Erie now less than a week away, the exhibition schedule will continues tomorrow with the final home game. The Boomers (2-3-1) will host the Rockford Riverhawks at Boomers Stadium in a 1:00 p.m. showdown.
