Boomers Fall in Exhibition at Joliet

JOLIET, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers rallied from an early deficit but fell on the road to the defending Frontier League Champions 5-2 in the third and final meeting between the two clubs this spring.

Erik Lis hit his second homerun of the spring in the bottom of the first inning to put Joliet ahead early against Schaumburg starter Robbie Penny. Abel Nieves, who singled, was along for the ride. Penny allowed just two runs on three hits in four innings of work, walking one and striking out a pair.

Schaumburg battled back to tie the score in the top of the fourth. Chad Mozingo opened the inning by lining the first pitch from Joliet starter Steven Maxwell into the right field corner for a double. Andrew Cohn drew a walk on four pitches and Gerard Hall reached on an error following a sacrifice bunt. Frank Pfister put the Boomers on the board with a bloop single into center. Raphael Turner evened the score with a one-out sacrifice fly.

The Slammers retook the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Dave Whigham walked the first two batters of the inning. Following a strikeout, Sean Estand pushed a single into the hole on the left side to score Zach Mandelblatt. The lead again reached two runs in the sixth as a run crossed on a double play. Whigham also threw an extended outing, working four innings and allowing two runs on three hits with four walks and a strikeout but was saddled with the loss. Abel Nieves hit a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth off Patrick Mincey to account for the final tally.

Joliet (4-0) won all three games from the Boomers (3-4-1). The Boomers will conclude the exhibition season on Tuesday afternoon with a 2:00 p.m. contest at Windy City.
