Boomers Close Exhibition Season With Win

CRESTWOOD, Ill. — The Schaumburg Boomers wrapped up the exhibition season with a 7-2 road victory over the Windy City ThunderBolts on Tuesday afternoon.

Schaumburg opened the scoring with a single tally in the top of the fourth against Windy City starter Duke Dykeman. The bases loaded as Chad Mozingo led off with a single and was replaced on a fielder’s choice by Nate Baumann. With one away Frank Pfister singled through the right side, moving Baumann to third. Pfister stole second and Nick Kuroczko walked to load the bases. Mike Valadez was hit by a pitch to force home the first run.

One run was more than enough for starting pitcher Tyler Watkins. Watkins threw five innings in an extended outing and did not allow a run, striking out two while scattering four hits.

The lead extended to 3-0 in the sixth thanks to a pair of runs. Gerard Hall reached on a fielding error to open the frame. Pfister singled to center and eased into second on the throw to third. Kuroczko lifted a sacrifice fly and Valadez followed with an RBI single. Windy City picked up its first run in the bottom of the inning on consecutive doubles from Matt Grosso and Bryan Burke.

The Boomers padded the lead with two seventh inning tallies. Drew Heithoff recorded a one-out single and came around to score on a triple off the wall in right by Mozingo. Baumann logged an RBI single to finish the scoring in the frame. Cody McMorris blooped an RBI single in the eighth and Kuroczko was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the ninth to finish the scoring in the game. Windy City tallied an eighth inning run.

For the fifth time this spring, the Boomers posted 10 or more hits in a game. Most of the damage came at the top of the order with Mozingo finishing 3-for-4 with a walk, a triple, two runs scored, and an RBI. Baumann also logged three hits in the two-hole, finishing 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Pfister posted two hits in the cleanup spot while Kuroczko and Valadez each drove in a pair.

The Boomers finished the spring with a 4-4-1 record. The first regular season game in franchise history will take place on Friday night in Ohio against the Lake Erie Crushers at 6:05 p.m. The home opener will be on May 25 at 6:30 p.m. against the Florence Freedom.
