Boomers Complete Opening Weekend Sweep

AVON, Ohio — The Schaumburg Boomers finished off a weekend road sweep of the Lake Erie Crushers by collecting a 7-4 win on Sunday night.

For the third consecutive game, the Schaumburg Boomers opened the scoring, opening with a first inning tally. Chad Mozingo led off the game with a walk and moved to third when Jereme Milons followed with a double to right off Lake Erie starter Mickey Jannis. Mozingo scored on a Gerard Hall groundout. Lake Erie responded in the bottom of the inning, tying the game with three straight singles.

The tie didn’t last long as the Boomers came back with three runs in the top of the second, all with two outs. Nick Kuroczko reached on an infield single and was replaced on a fielder’s choice. Andrew Cohn dropped a single into center to put the Boomers back in front. Mozingo followed with basehit and a double steal put runners at second and third. Milons picked up an infield hit to score a run and Frank Pfister also added an infield hit to cap the inning.

The Crushers pulled within 4-2 on a fourth inning run before the Boomers began to pull away late. The lead reached 5-2 with an unearned run in the seventh and stretched to 7-2 with two in the eighth. The combination of Cohn and Mozingo opened the eighth with a walk and a double respectively before Milons knocked home another run. Hall added another RBI groundout to cap the scoring.

Lake Erie was able to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth for the second consecutive night after scoring two runs, but Dave Whigham earned the first save in Boomers history by recording the final out. Tyler Watkins worked six innings to win in his professional debut. Watkins allowed two runs on a walk and two strikeouts.

The Boomers posted a season best 13 hits in the win. Milons finished 4-for-5 with two doubles and a pair of RBIs. Mozingo was 3-for-3 out of the leadoff slot with three runs scored. Cohn posted a 2-for-3 game at the bottom of the order.

Monday is an off day. Schaumburg returns to action on Tuesday morning with a 10:35 a.m. game at Windy City. RHP Robbie Penny (0-0, 0.00) will make his season debut opposite RHP Stephen Sauer (0-0, 3.18).
