Boomers Re-Sign Manager Jamie Bennett

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — After his first team compiled a 54-42 record and the best winning percentage of any professional baseball team in Chicago in 2012 (.563), Manager Jamie Bennett agreed to terms on a new contract to remain the leader in the Schaumburg Boomers dugout when Chicagoland’s premier minor league baseball team celebrates its second Opening Day on Thursday, May 16 at 6:30 p.m. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Bennett, 34, begins his second offseason as Boomers skipper having led the 2012 Schaumburg squad to within a game of a playoff berth during their Inaugural Season. Named manager of the expansion team at the franchise’s unveiling event on October 18, 2011, Bennett built the Boomers into a contender starting from a completely blank roster. The Tennessee native will build on a solid foundation with a number of players expected to return from a team that spent 50 days atop the standings last summer.

“Since the day he joined our team, Jamie Bennett has been the consummate representative of Schaumburg Boomers baseball both on and off the field,” said Boomers President/GM Andy Viano. “His rapport with his team, his knowledge of the game of baseball and his ability to bring in the best talent from around the country is unparalleled in the Frontier League. After turning the Boomers into a winner from scratch last year, I’m extremely excited to see what he’ll do for an encore in 2013.”

A 12-year veteran of minor league baseball including six as a player, Bennett joined the Boomers after spending five seasons as Pitching Coach for the Gary SouthShore RailCats, the other professional team owned by Boomers owners Pat and Lindy Salvi. Before joining the RailCats as a coach in 2006, Bennett appeared in 104 minor league games including 78 starts with a career record of 37-18 and a 3.89 career earned run average after being drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 22nd round in the 2000 Major League Entry Draft. The southpaw also played collegiately at the University of Tennessee and was an all-SEC pitcher for the Volunteers.
