Bennett Busy Building Championship Contender

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The acquisitions have continued in the month of March for Manager Jamie Bennett and the Schaumburg Boomers as the club announced the additions of four key players to the 2013 roster.

A former pitching coach, Bennett bolstered his staff with the additions of three experienced pitchers for the 2013 season. All-Star and former Baltimore Orioles farmhand Cam Roth returns for his second season in Schaumburg after a successful 2012 campaign, which saw the southpaw become one of the Boomers 10 representatives at the Frontier League All-Star Game. The starting pitcher in the Boomers first-ever home game, Roth earned the win in the inaugural Boomers game in Schaumburg after allowing just two runs on five hits over 7.1 innings to claim the victory over the Florence Freedom. Roth finished the 2013 season with a 3.74 ERA in 129.2 innings over 20 starts for the Boomers.

The Boomers also agreed to terms with free agents RHP Dexter Price and experienced lefty in Randy Sturgill. The 6’7” hurler Price comes to Schaumburg after two seasons in the Arizona Diamondbacks system, where he pitched in 37 games for the Missoula Osprey, the rookie affiliate of the D-Backs in the Pioneer League. The Colorado Springs native owns a 6-4 record with 75 strikeouts in 104.1 professional innings. In two seasons with the Lake Erie Crushers, Sturgill went 8-1 with a 3.63 ERA, spending time as both a starter and reliever. The left-hander struck out 35 batters in 2012, surrendering 58 hits and just nine walks in 50 innings pitched.

In a trade with the Gary SouthShore RailCats, the Boomers received INF Mike Demperio in exchange for a player to be named later. Drafted in the 25th round of the 2009 Major League Entry Draft, Demperio appeared in 51 games in the Los Angeles Angels organization, including seven games at Double-A level. The Georgia native spent the 2012 season with the McAllen Thunder of the North American Baseball League where he batted .263 in 39 games with two homers and 11 RBI. Prior to joining the professional ranks, Demperio played his final two college seasons for the University of Georgia and started 47 games at second base for the eventual national runners-up in 2008 until a knee injury ended his season prior to the Bulldogs playoff run.

Finally, in a trio separate moves, the Schaumburg Boomers traded RHP Robby Donovan to the Sioux City Explorers of the American Association for a player to be named later and granted RHP Jason Braun and INF Nick Kuroczko their unconditional release.

With four players added to the 2013 roster, the Boomers now have 21 players signed for the 2013 season as the recent additions will join pitchers Cody Griebling, Matt Kuna, Joe Parsons, Jose Rodriguez and Tyler Ware; catchers Mike Valadez and Ty Nelson; outfielders Sean Mahley and Bobby Martin; and infielders Eric Barnes, Brandon Gregorich, Gerard Hall, Ray Hernandez, Nick Kuroczko, Jordan Marks, Steve McQuail and Frank Pfister.

INF Mike Demperio

Demperio, 25, comes to the Boomers with significant prior professional experience including two seasons in the Los Angeles Angels farm system. A 25th round selection in the 2009 MLB June Amateur Draft from the University of Georgia, Demperio appeared in 51 games for the Angels, including seven appearances at the Double-A level. The 5’10” infielder spent the 2012 season with the McAllen Thunder of the North American Baseball League where he batted .263 in 39 games with two homers and 11 RBI.

Demperio finished his college career with two seasons at the University of Georgia after playing his freshman year at the University of Texas. The Georgia native batted .245 in 104 games with 11 doubles, three triples and five homers as a member of the Bulldogs baseball team. As a sophomore in 2008, Demperio started the first 47 games of the year at second base before a knee injury versus Ole Miss on May 4 ended his season prior to Georgia winning the Southeastern Conference Championship and finished second in the nation after falling in the College World Series to Fresno State. At Texas, Demperio appeared in 33 games with 11 starts at shortstop for the Longhorns who went 46-17 and advanced to the NCAA Round Rock Regional.

RHP Dexter Price

Price, 22, joins the Boomers pitching staff after a pair of seasons in professional ball. The Arizona Diamondbacks drafted Price in the 30th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, and he spent two seasons with the team’s rookie affiliate, the Missoula Osprey. The 6-foot-7 Colorado native went 6-4 in his stint with Missoula and earned a 5.09 ERA. Over the course of 104.1 professional innings, Price racked up 75 strikeouts against just 35 walks.

Before turning pro, Price played for the University of South Carolina-Beaufort, where he recorded a 6-3 record with two complete games, one shutout and a 2.39 ERA in 2011. That campaign earned him a Sun Conference First-Team All-Conference selection. Price spent his first two years of college ball at Auburn, amassing a 7-3 record and 5.49 ERA as a Tiger with 50 punchouts against just 23 walks in 77.1 innings.

Before entering college, Price was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 43rd round of the 2008 draft, hailing from Air Academy High School in Colorado.

LHP Cam Roth

Roth, 23, returns to the Boomers as one of the team's top players from 2012. The lefty led Schaumburg in innings pitched, registering eight wins, 82 strikeouts and a 3.74 ERA. These career-best numbers earned Roth a spot in the Frontier League All-Star Game as one of the Boomers ten representatives during their Inaugural Season.

Roth was drafted in the 29th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Baltimore Orioles and pitched for two seasons in the O’s system before signing with the Boomers as a free agent in April 2012. Prior to joining the Boomers, Roth owned a 5-6 record with a 4.72 ERA in 137.1 innings with 104 strikeouts.

The southpaw went 2-4 in 55.1 innings pitched for the Bluefield Orioles of the Appalachian League in 2010. Roth struck out 47, issued 21 free passes and posted a 4.23 ERA after allowing 26 earned runs over 12 starts. In 2011, Roth pitched for the Delmarva Shorebirds, the Orioles Single-A affiliate in the South Atlantic League, going 3-2 with a 5.05 ERA in 32 appearances. In 82.0 innings primarily out of the bullpen, Roth allowed 46 earned runs while striking out 57 and issuing 33 walks.

Roth attended the University of North Carolina Wilmington and pitched for three seasons for the Seahawks baseball team. An All-Colonial Athletic Association Second-Team Selection in 2010, Roth boasts a 3.93 career ERA with 128 strikeouts to go along with a 13-9 record at UNC-Wilmington. During a phenomenal junior season, Roth led UNCW with a 7-4 record, a 2.98 ERA and tied for second in the CAA with seven wins, winning five straight decisions at one point.

The 6’1” lefty was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and a Ping Baseball Freshman All-American in 2008 after not allowing an earned run in his first 21 innings of collegiate action. Roth also garnered CAA Rookie of the Year Honors and a spot on the CAA All-Freshman Team for his work out of the bullpen in 2008.

After missing significant time in 2009 with shoulder tenderness, Roth excelled in the premier collegiate summer league with the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod League. Roth helped Bourne win the Cape Championship with a 3-2 record and a 3.45 ERA in 13 appearances, striking out 22 in 31.1 innings.

A Second-Team All-State Selection for Virginia power Denbigh High School, Roth was a four-year starter and named Peninsula Conference Player-of-the-Year as a senior. Roth also earned All-Region and All-District honors as a sophomore, junior and again as a senior.

LHP Randy Sturgill

Sturgill, 25, comes to Schaumburg from the Boomers Frontier League rival Lake Erie Crushers. In two seasons with the Crushers, Sturgill went 8-1 with a 3.63 ERA, spending time as both a starter and reliever. The left-hander struck out 35 batters in 2012, surrendering 58 hits and just nine walks in 50 innings pitched.

Prior to going pro, Sturgill spent four seasons at California University of Pennsylvania, where he piled up an outstanding resume. Sturgill finished his college career with a 2.88 ERA and a 23-4 record, holding the university’s career mark in wins. In the process of striking out 241 batters and giving up a paltry .234 opponent batting average over 203 innings, the 6-foot-1, 235-pound big man registered a perfect 3-0 postseason record. A strikeout specialist, Sturgill led the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in punchouts in 2010 and 2011, also earning PSAC Freshman of the Year honors in 2008.

Sturgill also spent time with the Columbia Blowfish of the Coastal Plain League in 2010, going 1-2 in four appearances with a 6.57 ERA. Sturgill fanned 33 in 24.2 innings of collegiate summer ball.
