Mozingo, the only member of the Boomers to earn mid-season and post-season honors during the franchise’s inaugural season in 2012, rejoins what figures to be a potent Schaumburg lineup in 2013. The former Washington Nationals farmhand will be counted on in the heart of the order once again after leading the Boomers in a plethora of offensive categories including: batting average (.313), runs scored (69), doubles (22), triples (7), stolen bases (23), slugging percentage (.530), on base percentage (.385) and OPS (915).

McConkey comes to Schaumburg after three seasons in the Miami Marlins farm system where the 6-foot-3 left handed hitting first baseman advanced as far as High-A Jupiter in the Florida State League in 2012. In 196 minor league games, McConkey holds a .261 batting average and a solid .357 on-base percentage to go along with 34 doubles, three triples, nine home runs and 88 runs batted in. His best season as a pro came in 2010 with the Gulf Coast League Marlins where McConkey batted .304 with an impressive .390 on-base percentage and .420 slugging percentage.

The Boomers pitching staff also gets a boost with Spring Training less than a month away with four more arms added to Manager Jamie Bennett’s arsenal. RHP Tony Delmonico, a former sixth round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers as an infielder, re-signed for the 2013 season after appearing in 31 innings on the mound in 2012. One of the three newcomers to Schaumburg signed today is Dan Lazzaroni who spent much of 2012 in the San Diego Padres organization where he advanced as high as Double-A San Antonio in the Texas League. Lazzaroni attended the Boomers Tennessee tryout held at Cumberlands University in Lebanon, Tennessee on March 16-17.

Bennett also added a pair of rookies to the mix in LHP Scott Hays and RHP Chris Phelan. Hays is coming off an outstanding conclusion to his college career at Concordia (Tex.) University. In 2012, the southpaw posted a sharp 2.48 ERA with an 8-3 record in 87 innings following a stellar 2011 where Hays earned a 3-1 record and a sparkling 0.76 ERA in 23.2 innings. Phelan attended Division III Farmingdale State College on Long Island. As a four-year workhorse of the Rams pitching staff, Phelan owns an impressive 37-7 record and a 2.66 ERA in 283.2 career innings pitched to go along with 262 strikeouts against just 55 walks in 60 collegiate contests.

With Mozingo, McConkey, Delmonico, Hays, Lazzaroni and Phelan in the fold for 2013, the Boomers now have 27 players signed for the 2013 season as the most recent additions will join pitchers Cody Griebling, Matt Kuna, Joe Parsons, Dexter Price, Jose Rodriguez, Cam Roth, Randy Sturgill and Tyler Ware; catchers Mike Valadez and Ty Nelson; outfielders Sean Mahley and Bobby Martin; and infielders Eric Barnes, Mike Demperio, Brandon Gregorich, Gerard Hall, Ray Hernandez, Jordan Marks, Steve McQuail, Ryan Miller and Frank Pfister.

RHP Tony Delmonico

A converted infielder, Tony Delmonico started his second pro season as a pitcher after agreeing to a contract extension with Schaumburg on April 2.

Delmonico, 25, appeared in 24 games and logged 31 innings pitched on the mound in 2012 with London and the Boomers. In a Schaumburg uniform, the right-hander struck out 10 batters in 10.2 innings over 9 games down the stretch. Delmonico picked up a save and three games finished while also going 2-4 with a double in his lone game as a Boomers infielder in 2012.

The Los Angeles Dodgers originally drafted Delmonico in the sixth round of the 2008 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft as an infielder/utility player. With over 370 games played, including 100 at third base and 102 behind the plate, Delmonico came to Schaumburg during his first year as a pitcher.

Delmonico got off to a fantastic start to his minor league career in 2008 with the Ogden Raptors of the Pioneer League, batting .340 with 11 home runs and 20 doubles in 35 games. Advancing as high as Single-A Advanced Rancho-Cucamonga in the Dodgers system before being released earlier in 2012, Delmonico holds a career .276 batting average in the minor leagues with 37 home runs and 178 RBI.

The Knoxville, Tenn. native finished his three-year college career at Florida State University after he played his first two seasons at the University of Tennessee. At FSU, the six-foot infielder batted .374 with 12 doubles and eight home runs in 66 games. Delmonico hit .329 with 12 home runs and 85 RBIs in his two seasons as a Volunteer and was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American and earned a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team.

LHP Scott Hays

Left-hander Scott Hays signed with the Boomers as a free agent on April 2, 2013.

As a lefty from Texas, Hays began college ball at Odessa Junior College, going 5-4 with a 6.29 ERA and 52 strikeouts, earning a spot in the 2007 Texas Junior College All-Star Game. Hays followed up his first season with an even better sophomore year and compiled an impressive 7-3 record with a sparkling 2.91 ERA.

Hays transferred to Concordia University in Texas where he completed his collegiate career. In 2010, Hays struck out 10 batters in 10.2 innings, earning a 2.53 ERA while allowing a .184 opposing batting average and took another step in 2011, going 3-1 in five starts for Concordia while posting an astounding 0.76 ERA. In 2012, Hays earned an 8-3 record in 15 starts with a 2.48 ERA. He pitched a complete game and totaled 87 innings, posting a career-high with 81 strikeouts against 34 walks.

RHP Dan Lazzaroni

Dan Lazzaroni joins the Boomers as a seasoned veteran with experience in several levels of professional baseball after signing as a free agent on April 2, 2013.

The Boomers found Lazzaroni at the Tennessee tryout held at Cumberlands University in Lebanon, Tennessee on March 16-17.

After spending time with the Frontier League’s River City Rascals to begin his professional career, Lazzaroni, 24, got a chance in the San Diego Padres organization. Lazzaroni started out in the rookie league with the Arizona League Padres, where he registered a 5.40 ERA and 2-1 record over 18.1 innings of relief with 16 punchouts. Lazzaroni spent the rest of the season moving up the ladder heading to the Padres Single-A affiliate, the Lake Elsinore Storm before ending with the Padres Double-A team, the San Antonio Missions. Lazzaroni closed out the year with an overall record of 2-2 with a 5.40 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 31.2 innings.

Lazzaroni started his collegiate career at Siena College in 2008, where he began as an outfielder but moved to the mound his freshman year. In his first and only pitching start that season, the right-hander tossed a complete game shutout and gave up just two hits. By season’s end, he switched to the bullpen and led the team with six saves and an opposing batting average of .188. In two years with the Saints, Lazzaroni racked up a 5-1 record with a 3.56 ERA in 29 appearances. Over 60.2 innings, Lazzaroni struck out 39 batters while surrendering just 24 earned runs.

In 2011, Lazzaroni transferred to Southern Polytechnic State University, where he made 15 appearances in relief, earning a 3.38 ERA in 16 innings, allowing just six earned runs and fanning 26 batters while helping lead the Hornets to a 41-17 season.

Lazzaroni was also a standout at Lassiter High School in Georgia, where he helped lead the Trojans to the 2006 Georgia State Championship.

IF Brian McConkey

The Boomers signed free agent IF Brian McConkey on April 2, 2013 after the lefty stick spent three seasons in the Miami Marlins organization.

McConkey, 24, signed with Marlins as a free agent in 2010 and exploded for an immensely successful season for Miami’s Rookie League affiliate in the Gulf Coast League. The 6-foot-3 infielder, who played primarily first base during his pro career, batted .304 with 14 doubles, and 30 runs batted in to go along with his stellar .390 on base percentage in 2010.

McConkey completed his college career at the University of California at Riverside. In two years as a member of the Highlanders baseball team, the Santa Monica native appeared in 95 games and amassed 45 RBI and 95 hits including 20 doubles, 6 triples and 2 home runs. McConkey earned a .277 batting average at UC-Riverside and reached base on 57 free passes against 54 strikeouts.

Prior to joining UC-Riverside, the left-handed batter played for two years at Cuesta Junior College where he was named a First-Team All-Conference selection in 2008 as a sophomore.

McConkey was a four-year letter winner in baseball, three-year letter winner in basketball, and a two-year letter winner in football at St. Joseph High School in New York. In high school, McConkey also earned Los Padres First Team in baseball in both 2005 and 2006.

OF Chad Mozingo

Record-setting outfielder Chad Mozingo returned to the Boomers for the 2013 season after agreeing to terms on April 2.

Mozingo, 24, was an absolute steal for Manager Jamie Bennett and the Boomers after being selected in the third and final round of the 2012 Frontier League Tryout Camp Draft. Following two years as a member of the Washington Nationals organization after being selected in the 20th round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Mozingo was a free agent looking for work and attended the Frontier League’s annual Tryout Camp looking to find a job.

The 5-foot-11 outfielder did more than find a job with Schaumburg in 2012 as Mozingo set a number of franchise records during the club’s inaugural season and became the only member of the Boomers selected to both the mid-season and post-season all star teams. The Rice University product led the Boomers in batting average (.313), runs scored (69), doubles (22), triples (7), stolen bases (23), slugging percentage (.530), on base percentage (.385) and OPS (915). Mozingo also finished among the league leaders in the Frontier League in a number of statistical categories in 2012: fourth in batting average, sixth in runs scored, second in triples and sixth in slugging percentage.

Mozingo is the only member of the Boomers with a five-hit performance after going 5-6 with four runs scored and four RBI on August 19. Less than a week later, Mozingo became the only Boomer to hit three doubles in the same game after a 4-6 showing against Rockford on August 25. Mozingo also led Schaumburg with 23 two-out runs batted in and holds the second-longest hitting streak in franchise history, which lasted 14 games.

The Nationals originally selected the left-handed hitter in the 20th Round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Draft. Mozingo opened his professional career in the New York-Penn League with the Vermont Lake Monsters, playing 60 games and posting a .253 batting average with seven doubles, three triples, 17 RBIs, and seven stolen bases. In 2011, Mozingo appeared in 20 games in the Gulf Coast League with the Nationals rookie affiliate and posted a .262 average before signing with the Boomers in 2012.

Mozingo hit over .300 in three seasons at Rice University before being drafted. The Texas native made an immediate impact, earning All-NCAA Houston Regional honors as a freshman for a team that reached the College World Series. Mozingo started 58 games as a freshman and earned Second Team All-Conference USA honors as a sophomore before hitting a career best .322 as a junior. Mozingo stole 28 bases in three years including 14 in 2010, when the right fielder hit out of the leadoff slot and recorded 10 outfield assists.

RHP Chris Phelan

Rookie right-hander Chris Phelan signed with the Boomers as a free agent on April 2, 2013.

Following a prolific senior season at Farmingdale, Phelan, 22, was named the Skyline Conference Pitcher of the Year after going 9-1 with a 2.01 ERA, striking out 79 batters in the process. He also went the distance four times in 11 starts, allowing just 61 hits in 76 innings. In his four-year college career, Phelan went 27-9 with a 2.67 ERA and 262 punchouts in 283.2 innings of work, while allowing a .248 opposing batting average and just three homers.

Prior to his senior season, Phelan excelled during a summer ball stint, making five appearances for the Southampton Breakers and going 4-0. Over the course of 40 innings pitched during the summer of 2011, Phelan struck out 26 and gave up just four walks while posting a microscopic 0.68 ERA.

Phelan posted a 1.93 ERA and 7-3 record for the Rams during the spring of 2011, while registering 78 strikeouts in 84 innings of work during a sensational junior campaign. Phelan finished 2010 at 6-4 with a conference-best 3.22 ERA and fanned 62 batters and burst onto the college scene as a freshman in 2009 with a 5-1 record and 3.97 ERA over 18 appearances for the Rams.

Phelan graduated from Patchogue-Medford High School in New York, where he earned All-County, All-League and All-State awards.
