SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — With the squad preparing for the club’s first workout May 2 at Media Day, the Schaumburg Boomers have announced the additions of a total of five players including San Diego Padres farmhand RHP James Jones, Oakland Athletics RHP Daniel Petitti and selected three players in the Frontier League Tryout Camp Draft Tuesday.

Jones signed with the Boomers as a free agent and will challenge for the Boomers closer’s role after a solid 2012 season in the Padres system. The 6-foot-3 right-hander is credited with 31 games finished over his two years in pro ball with a 3.56 ERA and 89 strikeouts over 96 career innings pitched. Petitti looks to continue the transition from catcher to the mound as a member of the Boomers in 2013. In 12 appearances on the mound in the A’s organization in 2012, Petitti struck out an astronomical 29 batters, which is just under two batters an inning or 16.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

The Frontier League hosted their 2013 annual player draft on Tuesday afternoon after a two-day tryout camp at the GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Ill. The league invited 179 of the 402 total players back for Tuesday and 43 of them were selected to play baseball for the 2013 season of the Frontier League. All 14 Frontier League teams were represented at the workouts, and Major League Baseball scouts were also in attendance as well.

The Boomers three selections in last year’s draft – Jose Rodriguez, Sean Mahley and Chad Mozingo – are all in camp this year after playing the entire 2012 season in Schaumburg. Chad Mozingo, as the third round selection last year, went on to have such a spectacular season in 2012 that he was the only member of the Boomers selected to both the Mid-Season and Post-Season All-Star Teams.

With the ninth selection in the first round of the Frontier League Tryout Camp Draft, Manager Jamie Bennett selected Delvin Perez, a left-handed pitcher who spent last season with the Phillies organization. In the second round, the Boomers added INF Michael Lynch out of NAIA University of Rio Grande (Ohio) and in the third round, grabbed C Max Garza out of Dakota State University.

With the additions of Jones, Petitti, Perez, Lynch and Garza, the Boomers now have 34 players signed to contracts with the start of Spring Training just on the horizon on May 2 when the players report to Schaumburg for the first official workout on Media Day 2013. All four of the newest Boomers will join pitchers James Bierlien, Tony Delmonico, Cody Griebling, Scott Hays, Dan Lazzaroni, Matt Kuna, Joe Parsons, Chris Phelan, Dexter Price, Jose Rodriguez, Cam Roth and Tyler Ware; catchers Ty Nelson and Mike Valadez; infielders Eric Barnes, Mike Demperio, Gerard Hall, Jordan Marks, Brian McConkey, Steve McQuail, Ryan Miller and Frank Pfister; and outfielders Mike Bolling, Blake Helm, Sean Mahley, Bobby Martin, Chad Mozingo and Trevor Willis. The Boomers may have up to 36 players in camp to compete for a spot on the Boomers Opening Day roster, which will consist of 22-24 players.

PLAYER BIOS (Listed Alphabetically)

Max Garza – C

With their third round selection in the 2013 Frontier League Tryout Camp Draft, the Boomers selected C Max Garza.

Garza joins the Boomers coming off of a breakout senior season from Dakota State University. The catcher batted .295 in 51 games for the Trojans in 2012 with six doubles and a sparkling .419 on base percentage thanks in large part to drawing 26 free passes (eight walks and 18 HBP) against just 14 strikeouts. In total for his three-year career, Garza batted .256 in 120 games played, including 97 starts. 

James Jones – RHP

Former San Diego Padres farmhand James Jones signed with the Boomers as a free agent on May 1, 2013.

Jones, 24, was drafted in 2009 in the 45th round of the 2009 MLB First Year Player Draft out of John A Logan College and ultimately signed with the Padres in 2011 after being selected by San Diego in the 33rd round out of the University of Lousiana at Monroe.

The Paducah, Ken. native advanced as high as Double-A San Antonio in the Padres system after spending most of 2012 with the Fort Wayne Tin Caps in the Midwest League. For his professional career, Jones boasts a 6-7 record and a 3.56 earned run average in 96 innings pitched. The 6-foot-3 right-hander amassed 89 strikeouts against just 24 walks with eight saves in 64 minor league appearances.

Jones finished his collegiate career with two seasons at Division I Louisiana-Monroe, where he threw 80.1 innings in 2010 with 72 strikeouts in 13 starts before his breakout senior season as the team’s closer in 2011. Jones made 22 appearances primarily out of the bullpen the following season and posted a stellar 3.23 ERA in 53 innings pitched with seven saves and 46 strikeouts.

Michael Lynch – INF

With their second round pick in the 2013 Frontier League Tryout Camp Draft, the Boomers selected INF Michael Lynch.

Lynch was a three-year starter at NAIA University of Rio Grande (Ohio) and boasts a career .347 batting average in 157 games played as a member of the Red Storm. Lynch’s best season came in 2010 as a junior, when he appeared in every game and averaged more than a hit per game, finishing with 69 in 186 at-bats. Lynch opened the season with a 13-game hitting streak with a .512 average (21-for-41) as the Red Storm went 11-2 over that span. Lynch finished 2010 with a .371 average, 13 doubles, two triples and four homers and was tabbed as an ALL-MSC Honorable Mention.

Lynch was very persistent in his attempts to make the Boomers, as he attended both the open tryout at Cumberland University in Lebanon, Tenn. on March 16-17 and the Boomers Open Tryout on April 25 in Schaumburg before attending the Frontier League Tryout Camp on April 29-30 and being the second pick of the Boomers.

Delvin Perez – LHP

With their first round pick (9th Overall) in the 2013 Frontier League Tryout Camp Draft, the Boomers selected LHP Delvin Perez.

Perez, 22, signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as a free agent in 2012 and spent most of the season with the Williamsport Crosscutters in the New York-Penn League. Perez made seven starts, nine appearances and pitched 30.2 innings with a 2-3 a record and just 25 hits allowed. The hard-throwing lefty struggled with his command in 2012 but impressed at the tryout camp with a low-90’s fastball from the left side.

Prior to joining the Phillies organization, Perez attended Indian Hills Community College-Centerville where he appeared in nine games and collected 15 strikeouts in 14.2 innings pitched in 2011.

Daniel Pettiti - RHP

The Schaumburg Boomers agreed to terms with former Oakland Athletics farmhand Daniel Petitti on May 1, 2013.

Petitti, 24, was originally drafted in the 37th round of the 2010 MLB First Year Player Draft by the Oakland Athletics as a catcher out of North Georgia College and State University.

After two seasons and 76 games behind the dish, Petitti began the transition to the mound with 15.2 innings for the rookie affiliate of the Athletics in the Arizona League.  In those 12 appearances, Petitti struck out an astronomical 29 batters, which is just under two batters an inning or 16.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

In 2010 at North Georgia, Petitti picked up his third ABCA/Rawlings Southeast Region Gold Glove award in four years and threw out 21 base stealers, a mark that was tops in the Southeast Region. The Roswell, Ga. native committed just four errors in 378 chances for a .989 fielding percentage and boasts a career stolen base percentage of .462. At the plate, Petitti hit .233 with nine doubles, three home runs and 16 RBI.
