Boomers Capture Season Opener 6-2

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - It was a perfect night for baseball as the Schaumburg Boomers got the 2013 season underway by taking advantage of several miscues from the Windy City ThunderBolts to win their season opener 6-2.

The Boomers never trailed in the contest and were led by the efforts of Brian McConkey, who went 3-3 in his Boomers debut and the Star 105.5 Star of the Game, Sean Mahley, who finished 2-for-4 with three runs batted in.

Local standout Mike Giovenco was the Opening Day starter for the Boomers and tossed five innings while fanning six in his Schaumburg debut. Matt Kuna earned the win in relief with two scoreless frames and the bullpen retired 10 in a row at one point in the contest.

Gerard Hall, who recorded the first hit and run in franchise history in last season’s opener, posted the first hit and run of 2013 with a leadoff double in the first and came around to score on a Chad Mozingo sacrifice fly. One inning later, McConkey scored off the bat of Sean Mahley to give the home team a 2-0 advantage.

The Boomers held onto that lead until the sixth inning, when Windy City loaded the bases with no outs. Kuna came on to relieve Giovenco and held the ThunderBolts to just two runs.

The Boomers responded in the bottom of the frame, scoring on four extra bases given away by the Bolts on wild pitches and an errant throw. Mozingo was on the receiving end of two of those gifts, ultimately scoring on a wild throw to home after a McConkey fielder's choice hit.

Schaumburg added three insurance runs in the eighth, pulling ahead 6-2 and paving the way for James Jones to close out the game and preserve the opening night victory.

The Boomers (1-0), who finished 34-17 at home a season ago, will welcome the Washington Wild Things on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. Fireworks will follow the game. LHP Danny Jimenez will make his Boomers debut against LHP Shawn Smith.
