Boomers Win, Walk-off Style in Eleven

SCHAUMBURG – Ill. - The Schaumburg Boomers closed out their Inaugural Season with a 6-4 come-from-behind win against the Washington Wild Things. On Friday, the Boomers recaptured that magic in the club's second game of the year with a 3-2 comeback victory over Washington.

After falling behind 1-0 to the Wild Things in the first inning, Boomers starting pitcher and St. Charles native Danny Jimenez settled in and took Washington's offense out of the game as the Schaumburg sticks got things rolling in the third inning. Chad Mozingo doubled in two runs on one of his three hits on the night, giving the Boomers a 2-1 advantage.

The Wild Things stormed back in the seventh inning, tying the game at two on a Rick Devereaux double, but that’s all Washington could must as the Boomers pitching staff locked down the game. The Boomers quartet of Jimenez, James Bierlein, Dan Lazzaroni, and Jose Rodriguez combined for 13 strikeouts to tie a franchise record set last season on May 30. Rodriguez earned the win in relief.

Mozingo started the 11th off with a double, followed by an intentional walk of Frank Pfister, and Brian McConkey turned a perfectly placed sacrifice attempt into a bunt base hit to load the bases and set the stage for the late-inning heroics. Alexi Colon, who was signed by Schaumburg just four days ago, dug into the batter's box beneath the Boomers Stadium lights and smacked a walk-off hit down the right field line. The shot scored Mozingo and propelled the Boomers to a 3-2 victory.

The Boomers (2-0) are back in action on Saturday night at 6 p.m. against the Washington Wild Things. RHP Cody Griebling, who won six games as a starter last season, will make his 2013 debut opposite RHP Shawn Sanford. Saturday night will feature live music as well as a pajama party at Boomers Stadium.
